View Full Version : Working on a Home Page...

I have had the goal of well over a year to publish a home page and I'm embarking on that tonight. I'm going through my FrontPage book for Dummies. I'm a pretty good editor of my thoughts, so I'm just trying to "slap some paint down on the canvass" and see where it takes me.

I've never been real great about pre-planning things like this. When I write something or do a speech... I just start into it. Now sometimes it will change immensely over the course of time, but I'm a pretty kinesthetic learner. I need to be active to think.

I actually tried publishing just a few words like "Welcome to my Website" and that hasn't showed up yet. I'm so pathetic to be working for an ISP!!!

The only real thing I know I want to publish is pictures and I don't even own a scanner or digital camera. But, I know I can get a scanner pretty cheap and have it on my list of things to acquire in the near future.

Anyway, once I do figure it out hopefully I can publish a few pictures of angie r and myself. I think it is so neat to actually get a face with a name. I did find 2 pictures of me on a fellow workers website, but they were both extreme close-ups taken by a digital camera. I asked dw if I should post them and she said "Brian... you look scary!"

I think it will also be cool to throw some pictures of myself and twin brother Brent. Not to mention our lovely kids! Anyway, any advice on Front Page will be appreciated.

All the people I work with love Linux and pure HTML. They all think Bill Gates is the Anti-Christ, so I'm not counting on them for much support on a Microsoft based product!

Sounds like a lot of fun... I wish I was smart enough to do something like making my own homepage. I'm not very good with my wording, and it takes me forever to word things so it sounds understandable and not totally stupid. (did that make sense??? LOL) Dh say's that sometimes I tend to "go on" too much. LOL Keep us informed as to how it's going... I am anxious for you to get it up and running... and being able to see what you and angie look like. :) Good luck!!!

Oh yeah... how did your speech go the other night?

Diane...

Good luck. I hope that it is up and running soon. I don' t have the skills to do something like that, but I wish I did. It sounds like fun. Let us know when you are finished, I would love to see it.

Here's a link to ours if you want to look at the code - that's what dh did sometimes when he first started our web site.

http://www.ionet.net/~hignight/

We don't have the pictures up yet - dh promised he'd do it tonight. Our problem is that we only have 5 meg of space, and our new digital camera has such high resolution that one picture was taking up a meg and a half of it! Dh found a way to work around that - the pics won't look as nice on the site of course because we've got to turn the resolution down.

TXmom- Cool page! Did he write it in Front Page, HTML, or other?

Angie r- Don't worry, you know I won't post any pictures without your permission! I figure if nothing else wedding photos will be cool.

By the way, I wouldn't sell yourself short on your ability to design a web page. Now I am a novice, but as I understand it... HTML is a markup language and not a programming language.

When you type the letters B in [] brackets followed by /B in [] brackets that is HTML. Now, you can make it as simple or as difficult as you want. I think the hard part is just getting acclimated. I remember the first time I used Word and Excel and I've come a long way there baby!

I just wish I had somebody over my shoulder who could help. The people who do web design for our company all write in HTML code, and I never have my computer with me when I am there. So... I am largely on my own in doing this. But oh well... if I can't figure it out I'll just break out the HTML book and i know they can help me with that.

Everybody tells me that Front page is so much easier and I can tell you that the book is alot thinner!

He uses Hot Metal Pro. I'm sure he'd be glad to help if you've got any questions - just e-mail him.

Hi Brichard. If I remember right, you and my dh were chatting about this "stuff" one night. He says he'll help you out as you need....just post here or email him at doug@mail.mcdougdesigns.com

Have fun!

My dh knows just about everything you could possibly need probably. I know some html. I am working on making my own web page. Dh is teaching me. Its really not that hard and the main part of the html book you need is the reference part that tells you all the codes. Dh says I don't have to read the whole thing. If you have any questions or need any help email me and I can help or if I can't my dh probably can.

Btw. My www. listed on this site is not the one I am actually creating right now. I haven't even finished that one because I don't like the way they set it up.

I'm sure my dh knows Front page. He had to learn it for work. Html really isn't that hard either though. (and yes he's one of those geeks who prefers Linux and Html..LOL)

MM! Congrats on the web page. It's an effort to maintain. Mine http://www.geocities.com/ariannapr1 is written in HTML. I have the Full version of Front Page 98 and what ever the version is that is included with Office 2000. I have to admit, It was easier to learn HTML coding rather than fiddle with all those icons in FP. I'm here for help and support of need be.
I like working other MS programs into the web as well. This can be accomplished by simply saving the document as a web page, then up loading to file manager. I have spent more time learnng PP and found it's a really good way to keep my childrens attention in class. We all like moving pictures right? lol ßß!

Brichard, I've used Macromedia Dreamweaver and it's pretty cool.

Also, for content advice, suggestions and technical help, I've visited here:
http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/

They used to have a bulletin board, but I couldn't find it. Web Designers visited the boards and you used to be able to ask for technical or design help.

p.s. Very cute boys, Donna!
