View Full Version : Honesty on the internet

Obviously we've got some multiple personalities on this board, and some of the things that are posted I'm convinced are made up. Does this bother anyone? I think everyone knows it bothers me - that's just how I am. Ds says I don't understand how the internet works - you're supposed to "create" yourselve on the net. Given the amount of time some of us devote to interacting on this site does anyone find it odd that we don't really know each other? I mean, I just cringe when I see someone post heartfelt congratulations or condolances to a post that I think is pure fiction. I'm a pretty tough person to get close to, so when I see someone sharing their feelings in response to a bogus post it feels like a violation to me. Maybe other who are more free with themselves don't see it that way.

I don't understand making up fictional characters either. I am who I am! The truth is much easier to remember!

exactly......I agree, I am who I am....why would you want to, and how confussing would that be....I couldn't remember who I was then....LOL..

I would say I am more aloof here than in person, but am distant either way.

Diane

I must be the only nieve one here because I guess I really am totally oblivious as to who or what posts you're talking about. I've run into a few wierd and totally unbelievable posts... but those are usually posted by newbies that have never posted here before, and they never stick around long enough to make it matter to me anyway. :)

I am definitely who I am... and in reading this post I'm hoping that no one thinks that I'm one of those with a multiple personality. When I posted about my dad and about how he died... he REALLY did die. I'd like to think that the majority of us here are as nice/good and honest as I try to be. What you see (or don't see) is what you get... :)

Diane...

Diane, you are not the only naive one here because it never occurs to me that a post may be bogus. I suppose I do my best not to take any of it too seriously. I mean, I share stuff, but not my deepest and most intimate stuff, and I care about the people here, but I understand that I don't really "know" most of the people here.

I guess I feel like a congratulations or a condolence is a congratulations or a condolence whether it's by a "real" person or not, because how "real" are we all to one another anyway? Some of us have met in person and some of us email each other outside of the box, but the rest of us are virtual strangers (no pun intended.)

Also, because I don't know the people here, I pay more attention to what is said.

Amy

I do believe that there are some posters on this board who are not what they seem. It does make me feel sad, because this place has become a real sanctuary for me, and the idea that someone is using here for some sick game bothers me. But it makes me more sad for those who feel the need to play the games..what are they missing in their lives that they need to create personalities or events?

I guess I'm pretty clueless also. I didn't pick up on any seemingly false posts, except the occasional outlandish one, as Diane P said. Not that anyone has to bare their entire soul here, but why take the time to create a false persona. Nothing better to do? I either respond honestly or don't post at all. Kind of sad to think about it. When my dd gets on the net when she's older, I'll have to stop being so trusting. :(

MaryL

I feel a little clueless, too. I guess I don't look that deeply into the threads. I like all of you guys....and consider you friends, and that's all that matters to me. (Now you've got me curious..and I might go back through some of the past threads!:)

Jeff

I would think the webmasters and potentially the moderators would have access to the IP Addresses and would know for sure (with the static addresses) and reasonably sure (with the nonstatic addresses) who is posting what and who the Sybils of the board are.

I guess it doesn't matter to me too much if some people lie or invent things on the board. I have people lying to me and around me frequently at work. I feel a bit sad for them, that they feel they need to do that. But what I do enjoy here, and have come to count on, is the sharing of knowledge and ideas. I'm amazed by how much people try to help each other. If someone posts a false issue, I may still get information useful to me from the responses. I agree with Donna that it seems a sort of violation to solicit emotional responses under false pretenses, but I guess I can get over that.
You know a lot about some things in my life, but I agree with Amy, there are a lot of things I don't bring here. I'm very protective of my privacy in my offline life. (Heck, my ex once asked what I was thinking about--I think I said something like "what's it to ya?") Not very forthcoming or open, do you think? LOL

JAK
10-12-2001, 06:04 PM
I'm in Daine's boat with Karen. Am I really that clueless that I don't understand what some of you are refering to? I don't like to post really personal stuff about myself or family (not most of the time anyway), but I am who I am with what I do post and don't need to lie or make up things. I have better things to do with my time.

Brichard
10-12-2001, 06:29 PM
I am sure that there are people who use aliases here. It happens on the other board I go to all the time. But until recently, it used to show the IP's with each post publically. So... with a fair amount of ease you could tell who was doing what.

I've never understood why. I mean it isn't that difficult to do. I could create 3-4 personalities and have conversations with myself, but how sad is that? I just don't get it.

IP's are only part of the issue though. Dw and I will often have the same IP b/c we are in love with the cable modem! :) But, I go to Bloomington every Monday and sometimes post their which would give a different IP, and dw will occassionally use the dial-up modem upstairs to check her mail.

I'm not going to worry about it. When Ann W asked if "it was really Brichard" on my post the other day b/c of speaking in the third person I started to wonder... are they going to think I am a creation from dw? That is the sad part, their are enough deceitful people that it may always be a question on somebody's part.

I don't look at the IB as a sanctuary, I think of it a bit like Pen Pals on the web. I can tell you that although everybody is probably sick of my weight loss updates, I can't wait to put them up every Monday. It really makes me reconsider how far I stretch my boundaries on the weekend. I would hate to come in on a Monday and gain! I must lose to avoid public humiliation!

Anyway, to quote the philosopher Popeye "I yam what I yam and that's all I yam!"

TXmom~Yes, I talk to her quite frequently, though with school having started and everything we've both been really busy so it's been a while. Too long. I wish she would come back here because I love her outlook, but she won't. Dang. Oh well. We still have pretty good chats.

Somebody please enlighten me and tell me who the "suspects" are! LOL! I have sometimes questioned some posters, but by the time they are "revealed" it seems like they are long gone. On another board I visit there has occassionally been people who have made up stories, identities, and gotten sympathy (and more) from people....however on that same board there are also many more "cat fights", etc. very sad. Naive me just never thought it was a great threat here - most seem so genuine. I am who I am. I don't post my dks names, but as I have said before my user name is my rl name - in fact I even begged to change it. :D

I am in the boat with DianeP, JAK, Karen, and KarlaB., I can't think of any post that strikes me as bogus right off hand. I just might go back and look at back post too, however I have been told that I am very naive, so I probably wouldn't notice anyway.

PS I don't think that they were refering to you Diane P.

I guess since I met some posters from the Pacers forum that I don't think it is a big deal. If the meeting was not in a public place I'd probably be a bit more concerned.

You know an IB reunion could solve alot of this... :)

But, with a new kid on the way our budget has tightened severely. How 'bout ya'll come to Indianapolis so Jeff and Angie R and I don't have to travel?

Sounds fair to me! :)

I also think a trip to the Mall of America might be fun where we could meet up with Diane P and Karla B.

I'm in that same boat as DianeP, JAK, Karen, and KarlaB and Leigh. I think the boat is going to sink! Since we started registering I haven't noticed anyone that I thought was leading a double life.

Funny some of you should mention meeting each other. A couple of years ago I took my ornament exchange directly to someones house and left it at the door. I felt really weird. Its odd talking to someone and actually going up to their door but never having met them. I know I was a little worried she would think I was some psycho nut (only am on my good days!).

On another board I go to (romance books) people are meeting each other ALLLL the time. A couple live in the same city and have become great friends. Many meet for an annual book convention and arrange to share hotel rooms. In fact just today I got an e-mail for one of the people that is flying in and wanted to see if any of us in WA were close enough to meet. I've never met anyone yet but have come close.

This will come as no surprise to most of you, but I'm clueless here too!

I usually take the posts for what they seem to be. When I started reading this thread I started to worry that maybe I was under suspicion since I haven't been posting regularly and when I do it's usually to complain and vent.

I DO stop in and read the posts many times when I do not post. It almost feels like spying LOL! I guess the main reason I don't is because I know I don't have enough time to read and respond to all posts and I don't want anyone to feel slighted.

I would be VERY interested to know who is under suspicion, especially if it is me! LOL

I'm so lost! I had no clue anyone might be pretending. I guess I always try to take things at face (or post lol) value. I do post some personal things. I do it because I have found encouragement from some of the people here and I have been going through a lot lately. I want to let everyone know that I am who I say I am. I am curious of the suspects though! Hard not to be. I agree that it is sad if someone makes up a story just for attention.

That's funny, I've never thought of you as the romance book type. I figured you mostly read historical essays. Learn something new every day.

I used to do alias's on the old board but only when I was embassed by the subject, not to be mean. I don't do it now because its too much trouble, remembering to check who I'm signed in as and all.

Yeah... GREAT idea. When? Our luck we'd probably be the only ones in there. LOL Isn't there some way that David can tell who is posting as two or three people? Couldn't he clear us? I'm serious I really hate the thought that I'm now a suspect. LOL :)

Jeff discovered one day when we were chatting that while chatting... you can open up another Internet Explorer Window and sign on to the chat room. So, you could create as many ID's on the chat room that you could keep up with. Also, no password is required in the chat room, so I could say I was Karla B if I wanted to.

So... the chat room is not an effective way to demonstrate your innocence.

Brichard, I thought that we'd already established that Diane is KarlaB. You could be Amy/CO if you don't mind AnnW. (And you can sound like a Yankee--which is a GOOD thing by the way... :p )Or you could be someone totally new.

No way!! Of course right now it isn't even letting me in so I can't even try it out. It is pretty scary though to think that someone could claim to be any of us. Do you think it would let us (or an imposter claiming to be us) in though if we weren't logged on to the boards at the time?

Geez, now that I know this I don't know why some of you complained about being lonely in there when no one else ever showed up.  You could have just created all of us and had your choice of people to chat with! :biglaugh:

David, yoohoo David..... :)

I'm right there with ya on this one, Donna. I think that there are some people who exaggerate or make stuff up here.

And I know that most people like to paint a prettier picture of their lives than what actually exists--they don't post when dh pees them off or does something hurtful or when their kids do something awful (and we ALL experience stuff like that!). Bragging and posting about accomplishments is much more fun. So, I don't view that as a problem. While that's a bit annoying at times, I understand people wanting to be upbeat and positive and not wanting to air all their dirty laundry and personal stuff.

But when I feel that something is totally made up for attention, I, too, cringe when it gets a lot of concerned and caring replies. And I LOL sometimes when the welcome wagon comes out in full force to welcome a spammer to our happy little family! ;)

What can you do, though? No way to stop it, is there?

LOL... I try never to post complaining about my dh because I don't want anyone thinking that my dh is an awful guy... because he really isn't... most times. LOL Honestly... I couldn't love him more but there are definitely those moments when... Ugh, well... I won't go there. :biglaugh: LOL (jk) We've all got our bad moments but I don't think those are what any of us really want to share with our board "friends". If/when we do feel the need to complain/vent though, it's nice to know that we've always got a place to come... and being able to do it sometimes helps us to get over it a lot quicker.

As for my kids... I hate to brag about them too much because I don't want to be "sickening". LOL When dd graduated from nursing school I couldn't have been more proud. She just recently passed her boards, and I was again... very proud of her. When my second dd got fired from her job at Menards... I wouldn't have THOUGHT to mention that but... in the end she's gotten a MUCH better job that pay's her almost double what she was making, and it's in an office so... she's all the better for it. When my youngest made Cheerleading I was again... very proud. I could also add, without bragging TOO much that my kids have never really given me a lot to complain/vent about that I could share even if I wanted to. (Knock on wood)

I just think it's pretty sad when someone feels the need to have to make up things in order to get attention. I guess that sometimes I'm a little bit too trusting of people... Like I said... I am who I am (and no I'm NOT KarlaB... :biglaugh: ) Oh well... LOL

Here's the scoop. Diane is a moderator of this forum and I bet that she accidentally hit the 'edit' button instead of the 'quote' button. To a moderator, it will make it look like you're quoting that person when you're actually editing that persons post.

If you look at the bottom of the post in question, you'll see that Diane 'edited' that post.

Ok -- I saw this threat mentioned in another thread (kacee's I think) ... and still don't have a clue what you guys are talking about (thought it was interesting reading). I am a big lurker -- read all the new posts every day, but seldom post -- usually because I have nothing new or important to say, but am out in left field on this one.

MM! Kathleen my HH breeds poultry and exotic foul. No I do not have any roosters running around my compound nor anyone elses. All the "birds" live in cages or are enclosed in pens. Just on loose hen can eat a flower bed in under 1 hour! ßß!

Wow - I'm amazed! Since you haven't been here in a while you must have had pages and pages of threads that you hadn't looked at, and then to find my post in a 9 page thread is quite lucky!

To TXmom,

Well, since you asked, I came straight to the debate board. Finding your thread was easy since it was the first topic on the list. It wasn't neccessary to read through pages and pages.

The suggestion was made last spring, that Amy and I were the same person. We said we were not.

Your comment about Amy talking to Coulie seemed to me an insinuation that Amy was not being "honest on the Internet"

If that is not what you were referring to when you made the comment, then what did you mean by that question?

I don't even know you and you are wondering about me?

What we fear in others is usually the part of ourselves we fear most.

Perhaps your fear of dishonesty on the Internet ( you did post the topic after all) would best be laid to rest by you checking your own level of honesty. Not with me, not with Amy or anyone else but perhaps with yourself.

Since nobody else will say it... I will!

I think Amy and Coulie are the same person.

I could be wrong... I've been wrong before.

But if somebody offered me a million dollars to answer the question "Are Amy and Coulie the same Poster" I would say yes.

I go to boards where people reinvent themselves all the time. So, I find it hard to believe that somebody would not do it here. I quit going to one of the boards b/c there are more topics about who a certain poster is vs. the topic I'm interested in... IU Basketball!

:)

You guys crack me up!!

To tell you the truth, I'm honored. I think she's great.

My big question would be why on earth would someone waste their time doing that? I am so busy, I rush down here and grab the few moments I can to read/post and then back to life...It amazes me that people have the time to post as much as they do around here! I always wonder how on earth they can do it with family and kids.

So think what you will. But she's not me.

I have always wondered that too...even on the old board it would puzzled me why anyone would pretend to be someone else or just to post to raise trouble. It has always confused me.

edited to add: I don't think Pam meant anything mean by her post and was referring to the thread as a whole - like "Wow" that it had reached 10 pages as I believe that is a first for a thread here. I just thought it was rude to all of a sudden be dragging her into this and turning her words into something they weren't and slamming her.....

Are you guys worried about your bank accounts at all?

You cannot tell that Amy is a different person than I am? Who the heck controls this board and do they have any idea about how to trace an identity? If not...hope ya'll don't give away your true identity...yikes you might get caught for who you really are.

That would hurt.

Amy....to you I say...find a new board. These guys are sweet but not a lot goin on upstairs. In fact I think their computers are in their basements........oops...hope I didn't hurt feelings

hey wait...do you think all those in doubt would to come to a chat? I will come and Amy can come and then let's see. This is so exciting for me and my pitiful dual personality life.

Now I remember why I left this board.....I started to become a sarcastic jerk. But every now and then I need to be sarcastic so at least I have a place where they understand me.

Buh bye

To Karla and pam,

I owe you an apology. I thought when you said "ten pages" you refering to something else.
I was very wrong and I hope you can forgive me for being nasty. Cause my comment was intened to be nasty.
I am sorry.

boy, my spelling really sucks when I am trying to apologize.

Let me try again.

My comment about "ten pages" was my nasty response to what I thought Pam was talking about. I was dead wrong and I apologize.
I also respect you Karla for standing up for Pam.
I did that in the beginning for Amy when I came to this board last spring and now everybody thinks we are the same person.

They are wrong. We are not. I guess I feel I will be attacked when I come here so I am in defense mode when I post. And when I am defensive I am sarcastic.

I am truly sorry.

Did I spell it all correctly? I have no idea how to check it.

Coulamy,

This is my last response on this thread b/c I don't care enough about it to comment past these words!

1. You both are from the same state.
2. Coulie's soul existence in life is to support Amy in any argument.
3. Although Coulie seemed to fade away... she suddenly shows up after this thread is mentioned. It wasn't right away so as not to look too suspicious, but all in all the timing is odd.
4. Coulie happens to be quite rude in this thread (see 10 page post comment) Amy has mentioned how "boring" the new board is and likes to mix it up a bit.
5. Even though Coulie has barely shown up at the board, (75 posts or so) she just happens to keep in touch with Amy.

Any of these things by themselves would not be a big deal, but when you add them all up it lends to suspiscion.

I have other reasons that I choose not to disclose.

Possible theories for the invention of Coulie:

1. To invent somebody to agree with her on a topic besides Mickey.
2. To create some controversey while keeping the "Amy" Id from being attacked.
3. Boredom

I can't really tell you why people use multiple ID's, but I go to boards where people are 3-5 people. It is absolutely unbelievable.

There are many ways to disguise an alias by hiding your IP. You can run through a proxy server for one, but there are many ways. But believe me... I don't care enough to check. We all know a chat will not cover up the alias as a person can use multiple aliases in a chat room. And.. the names are not even password protected.

I'm not sure how you think I lose Coulamy. There is nothing to win or lose.

I just thought I'd point out, although I think it was already pointed out somewhere (which is where I learned about it) that you can open another window in the chat and sign in as two different people. Technically anyone could chat with themself that way.

Coulie, I don't recall a lot of personal posts from you- your family, kids, pets, hobbies, etc. I can't say that I know enough about your 'style' of posting to make a judgement call as to whether someone else posts similar to you.

I think it naturally draws suspicion, however, when a poster shows up to create a problem or 'magically' when a hot issue arises. Sorry, but that seems to be the only times I recall seeing posts from you. (I'm not here every day and I don't get every post read so I may have just missed it.)

I guess it really doesn't matter to me if people are creating mulitiple personalities on here as long as all the personalities can be polite and respectful. But since I guess I'm one of us here who
doesn't have much going on upstairs I guess it doesn't matter does it?

I think I best just leave this alone. I've said too much already.

The only times that I have been here people have been rude.
I was just trying to fit in really.
I mean go back and read the thread. I honestly came here out of curiosity. My life has settled. I have been involved in buying a house the last six months and that took a lot of time. I cam eback and came straight to the debate board. And voila! there is my name, in a sarcastic comment from the tread starter.
And she won't even own it. the thread is all about lying and dishonesty and then she makes a comment to Amy about me.

Yes, I stay in touch with Amy. She is my good friend ( Mr. Sherlock Brichard) Duh!
I defend her here.
You guys are so mean. I really did come here just because I sat down one day at the computer and not because Amy wanted me to. I don't even live in the same state as her.

You guys are very mean and every time I come here I feel like I have to be mean just to breathe. Go back a re-read TXmom's post. She starts the post about honesty and then comments to amy..."talked to coulie lately"
then, she doesn't explain the comment. She just says "I wasn't even talking about Coulamy"...whoever that is....

and nobody on this board even catches that. You are all so busy being mean to Amy and you should all be ashamed of yourselves. She is my friend and you guys are mean.

The irony is that TX/Mom WASN'T referring to you or Amy when she started that thread. I asked her to e-mail to compare notes and you weren't even who we were talking about.

If you are not the same person, then you two know each other and were friends before you joined here. It would be like me calling my friend up back East and ask him to register so he could back me up on subjects. That is being dishonest when you all pretended not to know each other before.

Buh Bye! :)

Brichard, I think Coulie means you lose because you said you think we are one in the same and we are not.
Also, Coulie lives in California, Bay Area. I live in Seattle.
Coulie and I keep in touch because we get along so well. We are good friends. I don't know why she showed up lately because after her rounds with David, I was under the impression she was quit of the place. Besides, I haven't even been around much these past weeks, let alone had time to cause any trouble! (Haven't you noticed how well I have ignored some really snotty comments!)
Finally, there are lots of people who agree with me besides Mickey. Because a handful of people here at the IB don't, that doesn't mean that I am alone in my beliefs.

Coulie, I think you take these people entirely too seriously. Who cares if they think I am you or you are me? I know it seems to you like people are unkind here. Some are, it's true. But others aren't, and I've found that while I can't really debate people here because I am too left-leaning politically and my straight forward style is threatening to many, I can find common ground in other areas. I love to talk about my kids here, and hear about how people deal with different issues with their own children. I won't pretend that my feelings haven't been hurt more than once, but I have learned to just let it go and not get sucked into the icky stuff. In the real world, it's just not worth it. I try to gravitate towards those who are funny and intelligent and kind and leave the others to their own karma.

I can't BELIEVE were going over this whole thing AGAIN! This thread is already over 10 pages long... :biglaugh: IMHO if Amy wants to post as Coulie or Coulie wants to post as Amy... let her. We all know so if she thinks she's kidding anyone... she's not. It IS strange though how the only time Coulie comes around is when Amy needs a back up or defending. Quite obvious.

To Amy/CO

I know TX wasn't talking about Amy or me at the start of thread. It is her reference later on that I interpreted as a nasty remark.

I don't know how to 'grab" the quote correctly but I've done the best I can to copy and paste it here. This is the post from TXmom. It seems directed at Amy. For what purpose? To serve what? Who is this in reference to if it is not amy and not me?

BTW - Have you talked to coulie lately?

this quote was on the first debate topic that came up when I came back. I thought there might be a larger group of truly warm people here besides Mickey and Amy. I was wrong. And this board brought out the worst in me. YUCK!

I am totally willing to be wrong. But I fail to see who TX was talking about if not me and I fail to see how the comment is not nasty. TX was fully aware of the fact that this board thought Amy and I were the same person last spring. We are not.

I did respond very nastily. I know. And I am sorry for being a bitch. I was being defensive because of the comment.

It would also be nice to have someone step up to the plate about
it instead of just denying the comment was even about Amy or me. It's doesn't appear to be directed at anyone else. Txmom didn't say "hey Annw, have you talked to Mickey lately?"
So TX and Amy/CO please explain.

Please,

Coulie
