Per President Bush's request......how many of you are having your children send $1 to the white house for Afgan children aid?
Our school is organizing a campaign.
Our school is collecting pennies for pentagon and Nickels for New York. So far no one has mention the Afgan children. We're a giving community I'm sure someone will organize something.

I haven't heard about it here either. I am sure it will come up soon.

I heard that the children were supposed to mail $1 directly to the White House, and were also supposed to "earn" the money...doing a kind deed, or a job for their families. I like that idea. I may let my kids send the $1 to the White House..with a note explaining the way they earned it. I think they'd like to enclose their own letter. I've also heard some reports on the news about how people don't like the children of US being used as Propoganda. ??? Have you heard reports about this? Maybe that is why some schools are not organizing it as a "general" collection. I haven't heard anything from our school yet. We did do the Pledge with the entire nation Friday at 1:00 CST. That was cool to think that all of the schools were doing it at the same time. Did your child's school do this???

I am not sure if our schools said the pledge or not. What time would that be EST? I didn't hear about it so I am thinking that they did not, but now I can't figure out why they wouldn't . That upsets me. :(

I haven't heard anything about it... but that doesn't mean that it hasn't been done. I think it's a great idea... :)

President Bush said this in his radio address over the weekend. From www.whitehouse.gov here is a paragraph about it:
"I hope American children in their classrooms and families in their homes put a dollar in an envelope and send it to America's Fund For Afghan Children, to the White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C., 20509."
I plan to do it and use it as one of those "teaching moments." However, it is a little hard to explain, because I haven't told him much about what is going on right now. (He is 6.)

I had each parent/child bring a dollar from home and we sent our's out today. Thanks for the idea!

I did see a collection table set up at the local Wal-Mart for this particular fund.
We did do the Pledge together with the Nation. It was 1:00 Central Time. I had turned on the TV prior to our building gathering to see if there might be news coverage of the Nation-wide event only to see breaking news of the latest Anthrax scare. It put a damper on the teachers' moods and several of us broke up singing God Bless America .

I'm having mixed emotions about this Afghan relief effort.... I did do it with my dd, and have planned on my Girl Scout troop to donate as well. However, after hearing that there are thousands of children who lost one or both parents in the trade center disaster, I feel like my money should stay here, "at home".
What do you all think????

Children are children wherever they are. None of this is their doing. Send a dollar to each to show your support. I heard on the news that one in three Afgan children have no parents.

I think you have a valid point. Maybe you could do both?

I have to admit that the same thing did cross my mind. Not trying to be selfish or saying that others elsewhere aren't also in need, but we have so many here who also don't have parents...not to mention the homeless population here.
Wish I could find/remember the source, but I read somewhere that there are 1500 children from one company alone at WTC who lost parents. :(

We sent the letter today! While writing it with ds and dd last night, dd had some tough questions.
"Daddy why are their poor people?"
"Daddy why don't those kids have any food?"
It was really hard for Angie and I to address their questions in terms they understand. You can tell them that food doesn't grow very well in the sand, but I still don't think they quite get it. It was really hard to explain, but we did drive the point acrossed that he was lucky to live in such a plentiful country like the United States.
Children are so precious.
