View Full Version : I am worried about my sister!

She's had an ongoing "sinus infection" (supposedly, according to her doctor) that will just not go away. Besides feeling stuffy and the headache and everything that goes along with that she has a lump under her tongue that is very sore and it hurts down the side of her throat and neck when she swallows. Sis has fought cancer three different times (breast and ovarian - twice) and thank God has won! This has her worried though, and me too. She thinks the doctor will send her to an ENT next (and I'm seething that she hasn't already done so!).

Has anyone experienced anything like this before? I know that when you are sick, like with flu or something your glands can become swollen. Are there such glands under your tongue? I know they are in your neck, but still. Sis told me before about her "sinus infection" but didn't go into detail until today. I hate being 1500 miles away from her!!!! We're nine years apart and didn't become close until I had my first daughter ten years ago... that's not near enough time!!!!!! Please pray that this is nothing out of the ordinary and will be resolved quickly.

I'm not sure what the lump under her tongue could be caused from either. Sorry I am no help. Thoughts and prayers are with you as you await answers. Hoping she finds out good news!! {{{hugs}}}

Here's hoping that it isn't serious. I would certainly be to a Dr. as fast as possible considering her medical history.
Keep us updated.

I had been fighting a cold/sinus infection for about a week... and then one morning I woke up and I had a lump under my tongue too. I was SO petrafied and got in to see the doctor right away. It ended up being a salivary gland cyst. I think it was caused from all of the drainage of the sinus/cold. I was put on medication for about a week or so and it went away... hopefully never to return. Can she feel this lump on the outside of her neck? They CAN be very painful. I'd suggest she get in to see her doctor ASAP... I will only continue to get worse if she doesn't get it treated soon. I'm not saying that this IS what is wrong with her but just sharing my experience. Good luck and please keep us updated.

Pam, I'm sorry you're so worried. I was thinking that it could be a nodule from drainage (I've had them up under my jaw when I had an infection--it's a lump and it's very sore) and then I read Diane's post. I would definitely encourage her to see someone ASAP regardless. Can't be too careful.

I hope that it is nothing serious.

Wow, she is quite a trooper!! Hopefully this is nothing, but she really should be proactive when it comes to unusual symptoms like that considering her history.

Thank you! I really appreciate the good thoughts and prayers for Sis. Diane and Mickey I copied your post and sent them to my sister. She confessed that she hadn't been taking the meds to dry her up as faithfully as she should because she was afraid they would keep her awake. I'm kind of bullying her a little bit to get her to go to an ENT. She's usually reluctant to really tell any family what's going on at times like these, or to see any specialist because she's afraid of what it might be! I can understand that to an extent.....

Diane, what meds did you have to take for the cyst? Mickey, did you feel better once everything was dried up? (Hope you don't mind me asking!) She just told me this has been going on since JULY!!!! Almost four months! :(

Sorry... I can't remember exactly what it was that I was taking... it's been a while. If she's had it since July I can see why it hurts so much and is feeling so miserable. She's probably gotten herself one heck of an infection. She shouldn't waste any time going in... I can understand her being reluctant/scared but she's probably putting herself through a lot of unnecessary worry/pain. Good luck and please... keep us updated.

Thanks, Diane. I've just written her another email, basically bugging the heck out of her until she either gets a move on or refuses to read any more emails! I'll definitely let you all know what's going on with the situation.

Wow, I hope that your sister gets into a dr and gets some answers soon. Four months is a long time to have a sinus infection.

Yes... please keep on her about it. She really needs to do something about it... she's waited long enough. Thanks!

I was thinking the same thing as Diane about the lump. Praying that it is nothing more serious and that she will get in to the doc asap.

Hi PamE...I don't post very much but felt I really needed to do so in this case. I have an Attorney friend that had a sinus infection...for awhile and did not recieve the proper treatment...ect. Well he has been in the hospital for about three weeks now...lost his left eye and they had to go in and clean out the infection behind the eye.. Hard to believe but it all started from a sinus infection. The other Attorney friend I went with to visit friend just kept saying over and over how dangerous it was if not seen about and taken care of. Stay on your sis 24/7 if you have to!!!!
Will keep you in my thoughts.

I was just wondering if your sister went in to see the doctor yet? I hope everything is going well for her and that she is feeling much better. :)

I just had another one--under my chin. I had a cold sore and it hurt like heck, then the lump under my chin developed. It went away with the cold sore, though.

Just read Laurie's post. Infections are not things to mess with. Get on your sis, Pam!
