Does anybody know of a good book that deals with teaching kids basic social skills, (looking people in the eyes, greeting people, etc.) My son is lacking ;) And I feel at a loss, I'm sick of reminding him how to talk to people :) Does that make any sense? DS is 7 and becomes very quiet all of a sudden when an adult talks to him. Drives me crazy!!!

Do you think that maybe it's not social skill's that he's lacking but maybe he could just be shy? My middle dd was terribly shy and she was the same way... she just COULDN'T find the right words or look anyone in the eye, and she'd choke. Reminding her did no good... it just wasn't within her. Just wondering. Sorry... I have no book titles that would help. I hope you find something that will work/help for him.

I guess he could just be shy. It's just sometimes I feel like it is rude not to give someone your attention. Maybe it's not that big of a deal. :) My daughter is the complete opposite :) Thanks!

I haven't found any books, we generally role play that kind of stuff...shaking hands, saying hi, looking in the eyes before we are going to be in a situation where that will be required.

nice to see you posting again!!!!

The behaviors you described are actually an element of language called pragmatics. How are his other language skills?

His other language skills seem fine to me, it could just a maturity thing too. Role-playing is a great idea - we've done it before but haven't done it for a long time. Will see if it helps - thanks AnnW, it's nice to be able to have some time to post again :)

There is a book that deals with children who have a difficult time socializing but I can't remember the exact name. However, the person who wrote it is called Carol Gray and she also invented
social stories. She has a website that describes how to write them.
