If you are near Seattle, how is everything up there with the recent earthquake?!? I hope that everyone is OK!

I live about 160 miles from the epicenter. We felt the rumbling. My shades shook, light swayed and the wall made noises but nothing fell. At first I thought it was my clothes washer knocking the wall. Then I thought big trucks were going past. It wasn't until I saw the light swaying that I realized. I had my DD come away from the table since it's under a large window and we stood in the area where all the room arches meet. Seemed like the smartest place until I looked up and remembered the pre-existing crack from another earthquake! Luckily everything ended then. Nothing even fell. DS was at school. Appearently the kids realized something was wrong first because there papers started moving. They all got under the desks and he said the desks were moving. He says the chalkboard nearly fell but I bet its bolted to the wall and they just heard it clacking. Haven't even heard of anyone hurt in SW Washington were I live. Only damage I've heard of here is cracks. JeannieOR lives fairly near me so she probably the same.
What was really funny is while it was happening I told DD (5) that this was an earthquake. I don't think she even realized what I was talking about. Probably expecting the walls to cave or something. When DS got home from school I asked him what they all did. As he was talking DD looks at him in amazement and says *You had an earthquake!!*. DS gives her a puzzled look and says *Yeah, didn't you?*. We only live a couple of blocks from the school!
So far I'll take an earthquake over a tornado anyday! This is my 4th earthquake. The other 3 times the others in the house didn't even feel it.
Oh wow, Lynda..glad you are ok!!!! Jeannie/OR...where are you?

It sounds like a good time to introduce your dd to plate techtonics! Praise God you are safe!
I'm in Seattle. It was intense, but everything is fine. I was downstairs and my dd was sleeping upstairs. At first I thought she was jumping in her crib, then I realized, no, that's not it. Then I thought a tree or something had fallen on my house, but it kept going. As I ran upstairs, I was thrown from side to side on the stairwell, and realized what was happening. I grabbed her, and ran outside and it subsided.
For most of my friends/family it was a little messy, picture frames cracked, books thrown around, but nothing really bad. Thank God.
Of course the news always broadcasts the most devastating aspects, so that's all the rest of the world sees. It took a while for things to get moving again, but nothing too devastating. Scary, though!
Great news Amy!!!!!! It sounds like from all the news reports that I have heard that cause Seattle is so smart in their building codes they basically saved the city from worst damage.

Glad you're okay Amy! I wouldn't even know what I was supposed to do in that situation! :\ Tornadoes and blizzards are enough for me!

Thanks for asking about me AnnW. Sorry I haven't been in touch lately. I've been so busy with the PTA.
I've felt the quake here pretty well. I live on a platue over the river and I heard it tends to applify them. It was very strange, almost like rolling waves. I think I could actually feel the direction of the Quake.
There is a science museum a few blocks from my house. The people in charge evacuated the patrons to check the building for damage. After a short while they let everyone back in and of corse they all headed straight for the earth quake simulator. LOL
