View Full Version : How much sleep do your kids get?
I was watching goodmorning america yesterday or some morning show and they were talking about kids needed more sleep:sleep:mine go to bed at 8:00 and are up around 6:00 so they are getting about 10 hours....I can't imagine them needing more than that....LOL...it is supposed to make them less clumsy, and better learners at school...LOL...so how much sleep do your kids get?
Let's see..on school days dd's bedtime is 8:30 up at 6:45 (10+), ds is 9:30 up at 7:30 (10). On weekeds their bedtimes change by and hour and they are STILL asleep now! LOL My kids can sleep on weekends until 10 if we let them. So does that mean they don't get enough during the week??? Don't know.

IMHO--Not enough. They probably average about 8-9 during the week, and only catch up a little on weekends because of activities and church--except dd1 who is a champion sleeper and can go till 12.....if I let her.

It varies with my dks, but generally youngest ds sleeps 11 hours and oldest ds about 10. Today they both slept in until 8:30!! :yippee:

The 4 year old gets about 11 hours, 10 year old gets about 10 and the 12 year old only got 8 hours some nights during football season and gets maybe 9 or 9 1/2 now. We'll see what basketball season brings if he makes the team.

About 10 hours (7:30/8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) We let them stay up a little later on weekends...but only 8:30 at the latest. I'm a big believer in getting enough sleep. Always try to get close to 8 hours myself (although it's usually more like 7!!! Boo hoo)

I swear that sometimes if I didn't wake my dk's in the mornings... they'd sleep right on through the day. LOL My youngest dd can go to bed at 10:30... 11:00 at night and still not be up/awake by 12:00 the next day. I couldn't IMAGINE wasting my whole day sleeping like that. I've got WAY too much to do to sleep away my day like that. :) I would just like to add that when I was a kid, my parents NEVER would have let me get away with doing this. My dad would have made SURE I was up/awake at least by 9:00. :) I think I let my kids get away with WAY too much. LOL

Diane - I used to sleep in like that, too and loved it! :D Could never get it when my mom and grandma thought we kids were wasting away the day, but now I see her point and love earlier mornings. :)

My oldest dd JUST now understands what I meant about wasting too much time sleeping in. LOL I think she's FINALLY growing up and understanding things for an adults point of view. :biglaugh:
Actually... I don't MIND having to get up early,. AFTER I'm up I'm fine... it's the actual getting UP and OUT of my nice/warm bed that is hard. Once I'm up and awake I'm fine and actually enjoy the rest of my time alone before any of my other day care kids arrive. It's probably the quietest time of my entire day. :)

Diane...
My dh calls it "bedland".....he hates to leave it! LOL:rolleyes:
Ds (almost 6) gets 10 hours and always gets up on his own in the morning. Dd (7.5) gets about 9.5 hours a night and she gets up on her own as well. I figure if they wake up on their own and I don't have to wake them up for school they are getting enough sleep.

Officially bedtime is 9 for both kids DD(6)& DS (9). Usually they manage to piddle around or DS will read a story to DD and they drag things out until 9:30. Frequently DS is still awake in bed later. And DD gets up alot at night. She always has.
I wake them up at 7:20 usually. All I do is turn on the light and say time to get up and they do. weekends they sleep a little longer but get up on their own. Sometimes during the week they get up before I wake them so I figure they are getting enough. Any sound like their Dad leaving for work or the HS bus driving past is enough to wake them up.
What is really funny is that DD(6) is getting MORE sleep now then when she was younger! As a baby she slept less (even adding her two cat naps) then any of the kids in daycare. And as a toddler we would wake up to discover her watching TV in the far room at two in the morning! And that was taking into acount that she went to bed at the same time as the adults, got up with us and didn't take naps! She exausted me!!!
About the adult vs child thing - as a late teenager I waitressed for and cleaned up after weddings. Frequently working until 3-4 in the morning on weekends. Since my Dad only needed 5 hours of sleep at any time day or night (he worked swings)he saw no reason for me not to be up working in the fields with him. I think that's why I hate mornings! I operate best when I go to bed at like 3 AM and get up at 9-10. Having someone decide that since mornings are best for THEM they must be best for YOU also is extremely irritating. I had a roomate that did that. She was in bed with dusk and up at dawn. I would be very quiet for her when I came in at 2 or 3 in the morning. She would turn on the lights and TV at 7 AM sharp with *Wake up Sleepyhead!* No matter that SHE was the one sleeping 10 hours a night and I could be great on 6 if allowed to sleep MY best hours! Worst part was that since we were military living in the dorms there wasn't alot I could do about it until someone else transfered to a new base and I could get a new roomate.

Our kids get between 9-10 hours of sleep (usually!). I try to get them in bed by 8:30 to 8:45 but it varies as to when they actually fall asleep.
Especially with Brandon (our 5 yr old), it seems like he catches a second wind sometimes and is awake until 10.
I tell you, when they wake up early and climb into bed with us, no one sleeps well.

Youngest DS goes to bed around 8:15 and is up between 7:00-7:15 during the week. Oldest DS goes to bed between 8:30 - 9:00 and is up by 7:00 (sometimes earlier). Youngest DS likes to sleep in a little sometimes on the weekend (like my DH), but oldest is like me, and always up early
