I took my down comforter to be dry cleaned this morning (ds got blood on it - long story). I have 2 different coupons for the dry cleaner I use. One says 30% off dry cleaning - no minimum. The other says 10% off household items, and then it lists comforters, bedspreads, drapes, blankets, down items and more. They wouldn't let me use the 30% off coupon, but I think they should have. What do ya'll think? It's going to cost me $45 to have it cleaned even with the 10% discount. With the other coupon I guess it would have been $35.

I would have insisted they take the 30% off one! If they refused, I would go elsewhere. Was it the owner you spoke to or an employee?
Donna, is the comforter a down one? I used to dry clean my down comforters and one day (after ds was sick on one!), I decided to throw it in the washing machine and it turned out beautifully. The other one I have says, "Dry Clean", but then in finer print below it gives washing instructions.

If the coupon for the 30% off didn't specify exactly what it could/couldn't be used for... I think I'd be a little angry. Unless it said... no comforter's... I'd INSIST upon them taking it. :) I realize that those are much bigger items and might be a lot more work for them but... if they didn't want it to include those items they should have made that clear on the coupon.

I should have insisted - I can be such a wimp sometimes! I've got to pick up dh's shirts tonight, I might just get the comforter back. Especially if I can wash it myself. I always thought it would ruin down to wash it - are you sure Mickey? I'd love to save $45! I'm not sure if I was talking to the owner or an employee. The man is Asian, and when he saw the coupon, he just said "No, no".

Donna, what did the label say?
I'd hate for you to have a problem washing yours--I just know that I've washed mine and haven't had a problem.
One of the comforters is a box stitch (so the down doesn't move much) and the other isn't, but is pretty old. I washed the older one first--it said, "Dry Clean Only" on it. It came out of the dryer fluffy and I shook it a bit to move the down around and it was fine. The newer one listed dry cleaning as the preferred cleaning method, but gave washing instructions, too. I don't wash them often since I use duvet covers (once every two months or so) and I dry them in the dryer on low heat.
I did a search and found this:
http://ocs.landsend.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/corpsales/CSM_HTML_CARE_BLANKETS_SHEETS_TOWELS.d2w/report?store_name=corpsales
Scroll down to "Down Comforters" on the left. It gives directions on spot cleaning them, too.
I need to try drying them with clean canvas sneakers or tennis balls next time! LOL!

If the 30% coupon didn't list any restrictions I'd ask to speak to the owner when you go back in. How frustrating!
I have a feather bed that I need to get dry cleaned and I got a quote of $25 here - I thought it would be much more. I need to get it in, but it seems like such a pain to drag that huge thing in.

I washed my dd's down comforter and it's never been the same. :bigcry: I put it in the dryer with a few pairs of clean tennis shoes along with some tennis balls, but it turned out REAL flat, not fluffy like it was before. No matter how much I shook it to move the down around... I still had TONS of places where there was none. :( I offered to buy her a new one but she told me that if I hadn't washed it she would have and we would have had the same end results so... ???
Anyway, I'd be very cautious before ever washing another one in the washing machine. :)

Sorry about your comforter, Diane! Could the dryer have been too hot? Mine are fluffy (fluffier than when they went in!)!
How did you know about the tennis shoes and tennis balls? I'd never heard of that!

Every day in my e-mail I receive a "Tip of the Day"... and it was one of the tips one day. LOL Sometimes they actually have some good tips... :)
