Renee I asked my dentist about them the last time I was there and she said that some are just gimmicks but that others can do more harm than good, and actually strip your teeth of some of their natural enamel.
I used to drink a ton of tea, and I would like whiter teeth, so I am thinking of having them bleached at the dentist's. Especially when I looks at my dds teeth, they are soooooo white :D
I am a faithful Crest user..really should write them..it's the only toothpaste I have ever used and never had a cavity in my life!
I had my teeth whitened a few years back (the dentist made the forms and you used a solution of bleach at night). I have a whitening spray I use, but I am going to get some more solution from the dentist.
I use Crest whitening and it helps more than regular but it's not going to give you the white capped smiles you see on TV. My sister who has smoked for her whole adult life had terrible coffee and tobacco stains. She used the whitening strips (about 45 dollars) for 8 weeks and I was amazed at the result. I've thought about trying them myself since my coffee habit has increased in the last 3 years. I have no idea how expensive it would be at the dentist. My dentist coaches our Bible Bowl team, I'll ask him what him what he thinks of the strips and the cost to have him do it.

Good question, renee!!
I have always heard those whitening toothpastes don't work or that they only go to a certain level - depending on how "bad" the teeth were to start with.
kat - Do let us know what your dentist says.

I also use the Crest Dual Action Whitening like Kat and can notice a visible difference. DH has noticed the same thing. Like she said it isn't the pearly white from the commercials but it is whiter. I had always held off because I heard they were bad for you. Then I read an article in Woman's World. It was one of those were they polled people from various industries to see what they themselves used. They asked dentists which toothpaste they used and it was Crest whitening. Since then I have heard that the whitening toothpastes of today aren't the same as the enamel strippening ones of the past. Even from a couple of years ago.
I'm thinking about trying the whitening strips too.

We use regular Crest - it's the only thing dh likes. I asked about bleaching when I had Trey in the dentist office this week, and they said it only works on natural tooth material. Since I don't have much of that left in my head it won't do me any good.
OK-let me be an authority on this since I work at a Dentist's office and we just had this conversation.! LOL
I was told the same thing as Kathy. All those "extras" are not beneficial when used in the long run. They do strip enamel and will cause you teeth to become sensitive. They hygientist said to use the cheapest flouride toothpaste you can find and it will work the best. Btw-thanks for reminding me about the whitening! My boss told me awhile ago I can get it done at the office for free (Im the office pet LOL) and I have forgotten to corner the Dental assistant to get it done. Merry Christmas to me!! LOL

I use Crest whitening toothpaste here too.
Never had my teeth bleached at the dentist, but I think I will look into it next time we go. DH's uncle is our dentist so he would definatley make it worth it for me ;)
