well, since this thing with my BIL, I have been thinking alot of my own mother...and hearing her in my head... I took out my quilts and wrapped up in one as I sat and watched tv last night....they aren't for show...you need to use them....I am wearing my favorite bracelet just because...and feel good about it....things are really simple right...do you have somethings that you don't use because they are "good" that's how I feel about two quilts I bought a few years back...they weren't terribly expensive, no one made them...they are just nice and I haven't wanted them to get..USED....LOL...

when my mother was dying she told me the story of her own grandmother and how she had all these beautiful lacy undergarments that she never wore...when she (the grandmother) died...my mother packed them all way for another auntie.....well I thought I understood that story until my own mother passed away...and I found beautiful lacy handkerchifs....never used....I am listening now.....

just thought I would share....BTW them quilts is warm...

Good for you. IT is a hard concept to get used to using your valuable things. I have a charm bracelet that I never wear. I just had it soddered, so it should be safe to wear. I just don't have the habit of wearing it.

Keep warm up there!!

When I redid my house, I brought back all the pretties that I had been saving for the special occasion for that very same reason. Life is so short, enjoy your things, and don't feel guilty about taking pleasure in them!

I too have learned over the years that we shouldn't let life pass us by. We need to enjoy everything each and every day. because you never know what the next day will bring.

I had a set of very expensive packed away that my DHs grandfather gave us before he died. A few months ago, we decided to open them for a huge family dinner we were hosting. Everyone was thrilled to see them again.

I thought about that when we were packing up and cleaning out my MIL/FIL's house after they died... They didn't have a LOT of nice/good things but some of the things that they did have that were nice were seldom ever used. I thought about what a shame it was that they had saved them... and never used them, for WHAT/who? I didn't need/want them... really. I've kept them only because they were their's and I knew they meant a lot to them but... I've got my own things that are special to me and I enjoy using. I thought about all the times my MIL's good dishes could/should have been used... and weren't because she didn't want to risk breaking one. When my dad died I stood there in front of the garage door and looked at all of the many tools that he had... hardly used and yet meant SO much to him and... he's gone and here they still sit. You can't take it with you so... you better use it and appreciate it while you've got it because chances are... after your gone, nobody else ever will.

I couldn't agree more. I use my good things all the time. I like to dress up the dining room, put out the good china, light the candles and have a relaxing dinner. In the hustle and bustle of ball season, it doesn't happen often, but it does happen. During the summer when I'm off it happens more.

I host dinner on Christmas Eve. Ususally 20 - 25 people and I insist on a sit down dinner. I use all my good dishes, but do have to borrow silver in order to have enough. One table is set with my gm's and one with mil's. I set up tables in the living room and kitchen and dress them in true Martha Stewart style. Everyone really appreciates the effort. That is one of my gifts to the family. This year we also did the gift exchange at my house because mom didn't want to subject everyone to her 3 cats (and I highly allergic), so that meant all the dishes had to be washed and the tables cleared out so the gifts could be brought in. The bright side is, I didn't have to do it alone the next morning.
