My niece just called today and asked me if I knew anything about low amniotic fluid. She had an ultrasound and the Dr. thinks her fluid is low. They are doing another ultrasound on Jan. 2nd. She is 17 wks and her due date is June 9th. She said the dr. didn't seem overly concerned but wanted to keep checking it. This is her first pregnancy. Any been through this? She is looking for advice. TIA

I know my doctor did an ultrasound when I was past my due date my last pregnancy. He said if the fluid is low they would induce me. I guess the baby wouldn't have anything to "eat" if there is no fluid??

Not good news, in my experience...my sister had low amniotic fluid, and had prematurely ruptured her membranes (water breaks early!). Her daughter (Emily) was born prematurely...I think my sister was at 19 or 20 weeks. That being said, I've also heard that it isn't all that uncommon....and many babies are just fine!! That's probably the case with your neice.

I'll say extra prayers for your neice. Let me know how she's doing. :)

How big of risk does this pose for the pregnancy?
Is there anything that come be done to make there be more amniotic fluid?
I have never heard of this and couldn't help her at all, told her I would check and see if you guys had heard of it.

TIA

Thanks for that site. I checked and it did say that sometimes by increasing water intake that would help. I told my niece and she said she hadn't been drinking as much water and would increase it. Some of the other things sounded very serious. Hope all goes ok with her pregnancy. Please keep her in your prayers.
