At work last week our teaching theme was opposites. I was running out of ideas for our creative table when a friend suggested we try something on hot/cold. We came up with the idea of hot/cold fingerpainting. The day before the activity I made up some blue fingerpaint and put it in the fridge over night. The next day, just before starting the activity I made up red fingerpaint using very warm (but not hot) water. When the children came to the table they were given a small scoop of each color of paint. The looks on their faces showed how much they enjoyed the activity. Not only were they able to differenciate between hot and cold, but also discovered that when they mixed the red and blue paint they created purple. Many returned for a second or even third turn at the table!!! :D

Thanks for the cute idea Ryleigh... I'd never thought of doing anything like hot and cold fingerpaint. I'll have to give it a try once and see what their reaction is. :)

Just to let you know that I tried this with my dck's last week and they just LOVED it. I didn't tell them what I had done and it was just a hoot to see the wierd/funny expressions on their faces when they dipped their fingers into paint. It was hilarious! This is something that we will definitely do again. Thanks for the idea!

Great idea for the hot/cold finger paint. Would you mind sharing your recipe for finger paint? I seem to have lost mine and cannot find another good one.

I've never thought of hot and cold finger paint, it seems like it was fun and I too would like the recipe. I have in the past done hot and cold playdough. Most of the time the children use the playdough cold because I make it in advance but I know how much I like the feel of it when I've just made it so I have made it at Playgroup a couple of times and let the children have it while it's still warm they really enjoy it and seem to play with it differently. Instead of just rolling and cutting it the seem to spend more time just touching it and it's fun watching them try to describe 'how it feels'. (Mostly 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 yrs).
Anyone who wants the recipe for home made playdough can get from http://www.members.aol.com/villageplaygroup although I think most people know it by now. :P
