I was curious as to the length of circle time others commonly use in preschool.

I know some days I have to cut it really short when the kids are restless. I was always trained/taught that circle time was the opportunity to really teach the theme. I'm really wanting to focus on some learning activities this semester but finding time short.

I'd appreciate your input.
Thanks!!

Mine is usually about 30 minutes. This includes my calendar/weather/"read the room"/story/song and fingerplay/ and theme activity or discussion. I really move it along! Somedays it's a little longer...somedays a little shorter. My story and songs usually relate to the theme or in my case, featured Letter. My 4's (Pre-K) play for about an hour when they first arrive. During that time I have two art/theme projects going on. My aide and I call groups of children over to complete the projects. When they aren't at a project table...they can play. It works out very well.

I think that circle time is one of the best time to really get their attention, and do some "structured" learning.

I would definately say that the kids should be able to sit for a 20 - 30 minute circle. Usually it incorporates a combination of things, as Mary said, including calendar, weather, introduction to the theme, songs, and some more physical activity...ie a marching on the spot song, or a small action song. I would usually calm the kids back down with a theme related story at the end of circle.

Thanks!!
That's about the time span I've been working with too.
I am trying to have a learning activity (matching, number or letter recognition, counting, etc) during that time. I usually do a movement activity to 'get the wiggles out' before story. (The director says I should do the that first before we even start and if they're restless, just don't do a story.)

Thanks again that will help alot.
