It's the tradition here for kids to decorate your locker when you have a birthday. Since we had only lived here a few weeks on ds's birthday last year, I went up to the school and decorated his locker myself. This year some of the kids are doing it, but I provided the stuff. I called the school office to get ds's locker number and combination, because I had some candy and confetti to go inside. They told me they couldn't give me the combination due to things being stolen from lockers. At the time I said, no big deal, we'll work around it. But the more I thought about it, it really makes me mad. I'm his MOTHER, if I'm not responsible for what's inside his locker, who is? It ended up that one of the boys had ds's combination anyway, so they can put the stuff inside. Does this make sense to anyone?

Unless I'm completely misisng a good reason for this, I have a problem with it, too.
Yep, if the police can get into my kids' locker, should should I!!!!!!

Donna, Did you tell them that you were going to give it to his friends so they could put stuff inside?? or that you wanted to get into it yourself? If it was the first, I sort of agree with the school. My school district is very security conscious. They can't stop the kids from sharing their combinations, but they do encourage them not to. If it was a parent that wanted access, I can't believe they wouldn't give it to you.....or at least open it for you any time you want!!

I'd have a problem with it, too!! Like you said, you're his MOM! It's not like you were his aunt, neighbor or parent of a friend. Grr!! Glad you got in there thru his friend!!

I believe that I would be upset too. I mean after all you are his mother.:{

Sounds odd....however, how did they know you were his mom??? Anyone could call and say that couldn't they?
How many kids/families go to your ds school? Do they know you/your voice when you call?
:)

Good point Darlene. I hadn't thought about the calling in part..the ONLY thing we are allowed to do in our school over the phone is call the kid in absent..everything else must either be done in writing or in person.

I just find it annoying when the issue of liability overshadows commen sense. If the school has a policy of not giving out locker combinations except to the student, then if anything comes up missing they can say "well, we aren't liable because we only give the combinations to the student and we told them not to give it to anyone else". Which is a fine rule except that it prevents a Mother from getting into her child's locker for the purpose of decorating it! They actually said I had to get the combination from my ds - they were only worried about covering their butts! I suppose I could have pushed the issue and insisted, but then they'd probably come up with a rule that you can't wrap lockers anymore because it was cousing too many problems.

Donna...do any of his friends know the combination? Maybe he has told one of them.
I think it's silly too that they won't give it out to the parents.
