My dd (almost 10) is going in for a tonsillectomy and adnoidectomy tomorrow. It is day surgery. She is also having her throat cauterized which we have been told by her dr adds to the post-op pain.

Any words of wisdom or advice? Should I really stock my freezer with popsicles and ice cream?

Thanks!

It's been a while for me, Kath, but I remember it hurting too badly to swallow much--I remember having popsicles and sucking on ice.

Hope all goes well for her!

Bless her heart. Rent lots of her favorite movies, maybe get some new books, lots of ice cream, popcycles. Good luck.

I have no direct experience with it, but I have heard what Renee mentioned about ice cream and phlegm.

Good luck! Hope all goes well.

ds had his out when he was almost 6. The next morning he was eating blueberries. Said it didn't hurt as much as the strept throat he had had for almost a year.

I was all ready with new games, videos, books and he was ready to go.

Keeping him still for the 3 weeks after was the hard part.

So hopefully dd will be like my ds and it won't be to bad.

(This is a kid who will cry over a paper cut????)

My dd was a mess after her surgery. She couldn't eat and everything hurt. She lost a lot weight quickly.

Two things to remember:

1. Make her down as much fluids as she can take once the medicine kicks in. Ours (Tylenol with Codeine) only lasted about 1 1/2 hours. For us ice water worked best.

2. we gave dd breakfast drink mix with skim milk to get some nutrition in her. She liked to sip on that when she wasn't feeling well.

Also, be prepared that there will be a lot of gagging from the extra phlegm she will be producing and will irritate her throat. Clear liquids are the only thing that helps that.

Finally, she WILL get better and it becomes a distant memory and she will be much healthier in the end!
