I was at KMart around Christmas and they have a few lanes set up with no cashiers where you scan your own stuff and pay on your own, etc. I had never seen this before and had to try it out. I paid with credit card that time and then a couple weeks ago I bought a puzzle and paid cash. It was a minimal amount and I just had to put my money in some slots. (I think if it's a large amount someone comes over to make sure you pay the correct amount?) Anyway, this was all completely new to me. Has anyone else seen (or used) these? What did you think? :)

nice for a few things, but a hassle if you have several items that are the same (grape kool-aid on sale comes to mind). The self check lanes don't have a number of an item button. At the stores that have them here, the lines are longer than in the full serve lines. Plus I am in a phase where I am tired of doing everything (pulling wire and repairing the dryer comes to mind) so I like letting them scan the groceries, bagging them, and placing them in my vehicle.

What did you think?

I thought it was okay ~ fun to try out, but don't know if it's something I'd use on a regular basis...especially if dks are with me. I can see what you mean about if you had several of one thing - I never thought of that. When I did it I only had a few items. Was also a pain when something rang up wrong. I deleted the item and left it there rather than trying to find someone to correct it. The lines have always been short when I have been in there, but then again our KMart is never busy.

I just read something about KMart trying to get bankruptcy protection, so it's funny they spent the $$$ to install these unless they thought it would draw people in and save them $$ on employees???

Okay, so we are just finally catching on here in MN? LOL! This is the first one I have seen and used!! 8o

The saving $$ got me to thinking - I never thought about how it would work if you have coupons...can you just scan them?

We only have one here at our Winn Dixie. I use it when there is no line, I have only a few things, none of my items are on sale, and I am paying by debit. As far as coupons go, we have a box by ours and when you scan the coupon, it will tell you to put it into the box. There is a sensor that makes sure that you put it in there.
