I saw this in an article on ediets.com and I was shocked on how many of these foods I give to the kids on a fairly regular basis. How bad are y'all?

10 worst kid's food:

1. Chicken Nuggets! Any fast food that's breaded and fried is bursting with fat. Nuggets and their dipping sauces also have a lot of sodium, which can contribute to high blood pressure in adults. Don't let your child's taste buds get used to salty foods.

2. Chips! Giving your child a handful of chips with lunch on occasion is fine, but keep in mind that potato chips, corn chips, and cheese puffs are mostly fat, sodium, and empty calories.

3. Doughnuts! Most are packed with artery-clogging saturated fat and trans-fatty acids. An average doughnut also has 200 to 300 calories and few other nutrients.

4. French Fries! It's unfortunate that fries are the most popular vegetable dish in the U.S. Kids love them, but they're extremely high in fat and have few vitamins. If your children clamor for them at the drive-thru, at least stick with a small portion.

5. Fruit Leather! Most rolled-up dried fruit has a dab of fruit, a teeny bit of fiber, few vitamins except those that have been added, and lots of sugar. Serve fresh fruit instead.

6. Hot Dogs! Regular dogs are high in fat (13 or more grams per serving), have lots of sodium, and don't provide much protein for the calories. They're also a choking hazard for children 3 and under. Serve only occasionally, look for lower-fat brands (try turkey dogs), and cut into very small pieces for young children.

7. Juice-flavored Drinks! Most are no more than 10 percent juice; the rest is water and sweeteners. (Don't be fooled by 100 percent juices made from grape, pear, or apple concentrate. Much of the nutrition has been removed from concentrates.)

8. Prepackaged Lunches! Sure, they're convenient, but they also tend to be high in saturated fat and sodium (more than 1,200 milligrams in some, about half the recommended daily max) and packed with sugary treats. Most also are nutritionally unbalanced, because they contain no fruits or vegetables.

9. Soda! American children drink more soft drinks today than ever. The average 12-ounce can of soda supplies almost 10 teaspoons of sugar, which can contribute to obesity and tooth decay. Kids who drink soda instead of milk are also shortchanging their bones of calcium and other nutrients.

10. Toaster Pastries! These contain lots of fat and not much fruit. Instead, make a piece of raisin toast for your child, and serve it with jam.

Does this article make you want to change what you are feeding your kids? Why or why not?

This won't change the way that I feed my dks only because I know that they have a pretty well balanced diet. It does include some of these items, some of the time, but not on a regular basis.

Feeling pretty good too. I was surprised by the juice box. I always buy 100% juice but it's saying that it's not?? What should we substitute it with?

I think they mean the Hi-C and Caprisun kind.

I knew chicken nuggets were #1 on the list! I missed out on the "lunchable" type meals though. I always felt good when my kids ate those....whoops!

This is like my children's fantasy diet. Wouldn't you just love to see a list of the 10 BEST kid foods?!

I don't serve any of these on a regular basis and most not at all. :yippee: They have fries when we go to McD's, but they never seem to eat very many. If I buy hotdogs I look for lower fat ones and any juice I buy is 100%. Dks prefer pretzels to chips and if I buy chips I buy the Wow fat free ones. Of course those aren't exactly the best, but I figure they are better than some of the others. :)

I knew most of the things on the list weren't very healthy.

I make my own "chicken nuggets" and on occasion will have McDonalds. Neither of my kids are big hotdog eaters. I never buy the prepackaged lunches because a couple of years ago, tons of kids got food poisoning from them. Chips, I only buy them as a special treat. Neither of my kids drink soda, nor do they like the fruit leather or toaster pastries. I buy only the juice that is 100%.

well I don't have to change what I feed the kids....I already cut those roman noodles out since you informed my how awful they were....LOL thank Amy...:)

WOW, I actually feel great about our nutrition here.......I don't give the kids hardly any of these....LOL...

I too make my own chicken tenders with shake and bake...my kids won't eat those nuggest at Mc Donalds....

for events like picnics and bbq's I buy chips and pop, but only non caffinated pop....big meany huh....we do orange juice in lunches....a little pricey but worth it....or I do cranberry juice in his thermos....

What surprises me is the fact that a lot of these foods are acceptable nutritioius foods according to my Child Care Food Program. Not chips, fruit leather or juicy flavored frinks... but everything else is acceptable. I guess even too much of a "good" thing isn't really considered good for you. :) Thanks for posting!!

I wasn't really surprised by any of these, but I have found myself giving these , especially hot dogs, to the kids more than I should. The last week or so since dh has been cooking they've eaten really good. (I've just lost my motivation to cook big meals).

When you really think about it, there are very few foods that are okay to eat often or exclusively. As with so many things you just have to serve these in moderation.

Your food program must be differnet than mine. Of the items on the list we can only serve the hot dogs, chicken nuggets and french fries.

We can serve the chicken nuggets, doughnuts, french fries, hot dogs,
We CAN serve 100% juice boxes but not the juice "flavored" drinks. We can also serve toaster pastries/tarts...

We can not serve doughnuts or toaster pastries. Plus the only way we can serve french fries is if they are baked- they can not be fried.

Wow... your food program is a lot strictor than ours is. :) They'd probably prefer that we bake the french fries... but it was never even mentioined, definitely not a requirement. :) Also... donuts/toaster pastries can be served as a snack although it's not something that I serve often. It makes me wonder what other differences there are between our food programs. :) Very interesting!!! 8o
