The doctor's office called Friday and said I failed my glucose test. Now I have to go back in next Friday for a 3 hour test. I can't eat for 12 hours before, go in for a blood draw, drink the glucose, then 3 more blood draws on the hour for 3 hours. Gag! Did I mention I have horrible veins? If I fail this test it means I have gestational diabetes. I read up on it and it looks like worst case scenerio I could end up with a c-section, which I will be having anyway..... Anyone ever had this happen?

Same thing happened to me with ds #1, Angie. I think the problem was that I went in for the test later in the day (3:00 ish) and had eaten lunch, a snack, etc. My 3 hour test was first thing in the morning....and the results were fine. With ds #2, I made sure that I had the "short" glucose test first thing in the morning just to be on the safe side! That test turned out just fine. Did you have this with any of your other pregnancies? Drinking that glucose stuff is Y-U-C-K-Y. Do you get the cola flavored? or the orange flavored? Both are gross!
Angie, I have terrible veins too. Ask them to use the butterfly syringe with a pediatric needle. That really helps! Even if they don't have pedi needles, the butterfly syringe is so much better!
My cousin and sil has GD with their 2nd pregnancies. They both had to REALLY watch what they ate and monitor their blood levels.

I went through this.
I had six blood draws for the three-hour test--every half hour. And I have horrible veins, too--only one that everyone can get first try. It wasn't too bad. And they actually let me nap in between blood draws.
My gestational diabetes was controlled by diet (I didn't need insulin). I had to check my blood in the morning and one hour after I ate anything. Saw a nutritionist who explained how I needed to eat (higher protein, lower carbs).
The c-section is usually necessary if you go full term because the baby processes the sugar you can't and as a result, ends up larger in the trunk--so what could happen if you deliver vaginally is that the head could pass and the body get stuck or have a hard time getting through.
My doctor kept measuring the baby (via ultra sound) and decided to induce 5 days early, but I didn't go into labor with the pitocin and ended up with a c-section. My ob/gyn said the baby was bigger in the trunk area than he expected (and I followed the diet faithfully), so I'm glad it worked out that way.
When I got the message on my machine (Friday at 6 p.m.!) that I had gestational diabetes, I was so upset...called the emergency number and asked to please talk to the doctor on call. She was very nice and said that it really is no big deal if you follow the diet and do what you're supposed to do. And she was right.
I hope you don't have it, but if you do, it's really ok.

Thank you for all the info Mickey! It is so nice to hear from someone who has been through having it. When the nurse called to tell me I had failed the one hour I bawled like a baby. Brichard was so sweet and he said "so what does this really mean" I'm like, :bigcry: I don't know :bigcry: . I love this new pregnancy hormone thing I'm having this time!
MaryL - This may sound weird but I like the glucose drink. I have the orange flavored one. With both my other dk's I took the test first thing in the morning. When they scheduled this one in the afternoon I asked if I should watch what I eat at all and they said no. I still didn't eat any sugar all morning, but did have a glass of lemonade. I shouldn't have done that!! I only failed the test by 4 points, whatever that means, the nurse acted like I shouldn't have to do the 3 hour, but had to because I was over the mark. I'm not really all that scared that I have it, but of course I started feeling all the "symptoms" after I read about them.
AnnW - This doctor's office is the first one who has been able to stick me without the butterfly. I told her she was awesome when I was there last week. She has gotten me the first time both times I've gone for blood work. I just know that 4 times in 3 hours is going to be hard. I should keep a better mental attitude huh? I think I can.....
Brichard said he'd go to the office with me but I hate for him to waste working time to sit at the doctor's office that long. Did I mention how sweet he is??
Thanks for all your well wishes everyone!

Angie,
I had to do the longer tests with 2 of my kids. It really was no big deal. Have you used the same doctor for each kid? I think that was the problem on mine. I had 4 different doctors for the 5 kids (the last 2 had the same doctor). For the short test, one doctor had me drink it in the office and timed it an hour from the time they gave it to me, another gave me the drink to drink before I came in and they asked the time I finished drinking it. (or some thing like that) I think the timing was just off which made the tests say different things.
I never had GD. I never minded the needle pokes it was drinking the stuff that I feared. (afraid I'd throw up!) With our first I was given the orange drink and then at lunch dh ordered himself an orange pop!! I'll never drink orange pop or koolaid again!
Hope it all turns out okay.
A friedn of mine that had her baby about 4 weeks ago had gestational diabetes. She just had to watch what she ate. Like you, she was already scheduled for a c-section. Everything went ok thrught the rest of her pregnancy and both she and the baby are great.
I hope all goes well on Monday. I'll be thinking of you.

Oh Angie that's no fun is it?? I had to take the 3 hour test 3 times with my second pregnancy, well 4 actually because the 2nd of the 3 times I just couldn't keep it down so we had to begin again if you can imagine!!!!:\
In the end, I never tested positive for GD, just grew a large baby.
I hope it goes well for you and the results are good.
Thankfully, I never had it, but wishing you the best!
My veins are tiny too and they used the butterfly on me, but it was so tiny, it too FOREVER for them to get enough blood out and had to keep pumping the ball in my hand. If you find someone who is really good, go for the regular needle and get it over with! LOL

Glad to help!
I cried like a baby, too! But it was ok...really!
(((HUGS))) I had it with ds and it's no picnic, but definitely not as big a deal as I made out of it, LOL! :) My biggest fight was trying to figure out the diet thing to control it. My dietician was either not really great at explaining or I was just thick-headed (most likely) and trying to avoid it. Once you get that part down (and the cravings for what you shouldn't have) it's a cake walk from there out. They did a couple more ultrasounds than the norm to see how he was growing, but that was the fun part. Keep us posted on your results!

How did I miss this post this morning? ?(
I never experienced this either. I hope all goes well when you go back in.
I never minded the orange drink either and thought I was nuts because everyone else I know thought it was disgusting. So glad to have this place with friends who make me feel "normal" LOL!!
Good Luck, Ang!!
