Something really scarey happened with my dd and I thought I should share as a warning to other parents. My dd had a fever 2 weeks ago but over the weekend seemed to recover. I sent her back to school on Monday but she started vomiting tuesday morning. She had a fever of between 101 & 102 DEGREES all tuesday and wednesday. I thought she was recovering on Thursday but she started to complain about an unlocalized pain around her eye. There was a very slight swelling and she didn't have a fever at the time but I decided to take her to the doctor thinking it was probablly a waste of time and that her sinouses were clogged.
It turned out to be at very serious and relativly rare tissue infection called Celulitis. Her pediatriion took a blood sample and gave me $100 worth of antibiotic samples plus a perscription for more. I been keeping a close eye on her for the last four days and it's finally started to get better. (At one point the swelling got so bad she couldn't open her eye.) My dd way very lucky because most people with this condition have to have IV antibotics. A friend of mine told me her husband had it years ago and had to be hostipalized for 5 days. (He almost died.)
Needless to say, I've been a reck.

OMG Jeannie, how scary for you... and how lucky you decided to bring her in to see the doctor. I've never even heard of this before! How is she doing now? I'm glad that she didn't end up having to go into the hospital... that would have been terrible! How old is she? Did they say what causes this? Sorry for all of the questions... Please, keep us informed as to how she's doing. I'll say a quick prayer for her tonight too. Thanks for letting us know about this. :)

Bless your heart! Glad you caught it in time. I just think Mom's have an intuition about these things.

Thank you for your concern.
She's 7. The infection can be caused by one of 3 types of bacteria. The hib vacine makes most kids immunue to the most common pathogen so the condition is even more uncommon than it used to be. Apparantly dd ran into one of the other 2 germs. The flu could have made her more suseptable. I plan to have her go back to school tomorrow. She's got her energy back and most of her appetite. (I think all the antibiotics are making it hard for her to eat but at least she's eating some.)

WOW! I have never heard of this either. So glad things seem to be going better and that you guys figured out what it was before it got any worse!
Oh Jeannie! Thank goodness for your instincts. You may have orginally thought it was a waste of time, but something inside you told you to make that appointment.
So glad to hear she is getting better!

Jeannie, can you give me any more info on what her eye looked like? Ds has some swelling on one of his eyelids and it is red and he said it hurts to touch it. Now of course my mind is running away with possibilities! :(

My dd's eye looked red like she had been rubbing it. She also had a low grade fever.
If you have any suspitons, call your child's peditatrition.
wow! that's incredible! So glad she is doing better.

Thanks for the info! His eye originally looked like that, but now it looks like there's a red welt on it by the lid - maybe like a stye (sp?). No fever whatsoever. I will watch him today and call in if it looks any worse. Thanks again!
