View Full Version : Stupid Question...

Does anyone know if it is legal to put pamphlets/flyers on TOP of mailboxes? I know that it is illegal to put stuff IN mailboxes, but?
Or, do you think that it is okay to do this? It just seems so time consuming walking door to door, and just seems easier this way. Also - in my neighborhood, we have brick mailboxes where something won't fall off.
Also, the pamphlet is in a baggie and won't blow away.
What are your thoughts?

I have heard conflicting stories, and it really depends on the mail carrier. Generally you aren't supposed to put anything on/in a mailbox that doesn't have postage on it, but I was told with Avon that I could hang books on ornamental things above or below or in such a way that doesn't interfere with mail delivery. Some mail carriers won't allow any at all, others are very lenient. One thing you might keep in mind, if you know the area you are distributing things-- you might be able to put things on the boxes after the mail has been delivered for that day, if you're pretty sure the residents will remove it before the receiving mail the next day. (I suppose someone could still report it.)
It would probably be best to check with your local post office.
Hope this helps.

I would check with you post office first. We often get political flyers and occasionally an Avon pamphlet, Boy Scouts or local fire station stuff, but it is usually hung on our door knob or on one of the hooks under the mailbox where a newspaper can be placed. Is your info in a baggie that has a hole in the top so it could be hung on a door knob or somewhere? Let us know what you find out.

btw - I was always told no question is a stupid question. :)

I don't know about the flyers, but I wanted to let you know that I was also told no question is a stupid question. How are you supposed to find out the answer if you never ask the question? Also think of it this way, someone else might want to know that same thing and just be to afraid to ask.

We've gotten things taped to our mailbox door before. It probably is best to call your PO just to make sure though.
