I think the best way is to put in shelves. Put the oldest child on the bottom shelf and progress upwards. Make sure you put the lock on the outside of the door. Your whole house will stay neat and organized, and proper volume control on the radio will cut down on the whining you have to endure.:D :D ROFL

Sorry, it's what popped into my head when I read your subject title. Just struck me funny. Good luck.

Love Cathy's answer! I started reading, scrunched up my face and tilted my head when I came to the put the oldest child on the bottom part. Since I assumed she had made typos I kept reading until the put a lock on the door part!

DD has built in closet organizers. They are shelves with a bar attached for hanging. I think if I were to do them myself I would use a wooden shelf with bar underneath insead of the coated white wire ones we have. i think they sell the white wire ones at stores like Wal-Mart and home improvement stores. The one problem with them is that you can't slid clothes from one end of the bar to the other since there are connectors in the way. Its great having that shelf in there though since it's kind of dead space. The lower row only goes across half the closet to allow for long items like dresses. On the back of the closet where there is no lower rack I put a clear pocketed shoe holder. I put DD's little used shoes on the top. She can put her commonly used shoes away on the bottom. Note I said can not does! The very top shelf is the perfect height for putting storage crates (that look like old milk crates). I put out of season clothes up there. Since they are in crates they don't tumble and fall yet I can see what is there.

DS also has the white wire closet organizers. His has two rows on each side but since he's taller the bottom row is shirt length. Down the center of the closet is a row of little shelves. Only about 2 feet wide. He uses those for toys.

DH and I also have the organizers with shelves down the center. We use ours for folded pants like jeans and sweats.

I had someone build a closet organizer for both of my kids closets. Youngest ds has a large double door closet. He actually keeps all his clothes in his closet. To the left side of the closet, we put hanging space (with rods), one higher and one lower. The middle section has about 4 shelves (starting from the top) for t-shirts and long sleeve shirts, and then 2 drawers at the bottom (underwear, socks, and pajamas). On the right hand side the man built it so we had shelves on top (for pants, sweats etc), and hanging space near the bottom. Right now ds doesn't have tons of hanging stuff so we added shelves near the bottom (removable of course) and now he puts some toys on any of the extra shelves.

Oldest ds has a single door closet. He has shelves on the left side, and double hanging on the right side.

I love the closets this way...it makes it so much more accessible for the kids.

The best money I ever spent was having Closet Factory come and do ours and the kids' closets!!! Each kid has shelves in the middles and then double hung on each side.
Our closet which used to be your standard walkin, now has double hung to the ceiling on dh's side and triple hung for me, plus shelves, shoe rack and long length.
