just curious....been catching all sorts of slack from ds and some memeber of our family...but both my kids still use them...dd is in a high back booster seat with the five point harness...and ds in in the highback booster seat no harness, just the seat belt...better safe than sorry.....

this is the deal until they are Ages 4-8, unless 4'9''.

need some more input on this...although I won't change my mind....

Renee...it doesn't really matter what we say. If you feel this is important do it. If your ds didn't want to brush his teeth and family members sided with him, would you go ahead and let him stop brushing his teeth??
Stand strong if this is something that you believe in!

Wow!... I didn't realize that kids had to be that old or weigh that much in order NOT to be in a car seat anymore. I've got some parents that I've done day care for who have 5, 6 and 7 year olds that weren't in carseats... Actually... even they seemed too big for one. 8o

I can't remember how old my kids were when we stopped putting them in carseats... but I know they weren't that old. When/if I have my sister's grandson... I always have him in a carseat. He's 3 year old and weigh's in at around 48 pounds... Ugh!!! (Very tall and full) LOL HE even looks too big for a carseat. Very interesting... you learn something new each/every day.

Renee...I deleted out whether or not I did cause I don't think that is important. IMHO what is important is that this is important to YOU!!!

Here is the law for New York.
New York

New York State's Occupant Restraint Law

The driver and all front-seat passengers must wear seat belts, one person per belt.

All children under the age of four must be restrained in a child safety seat that meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213.

Children under the age of 16 riding in the back seat must wear seat belts.

(2001 bills to raise age to 7 and prohibit kids in front seat not out of committee [1/02])

Below are the recommendations put out by the NHTSA and AAP. Child Restraint Laws do not yet coincide with these recommendations. Your child(ren) will be SAFEST if you follow these general guidelines.

- Infants should stay rear facing until 12 mos. AND 20 lbs..
If an infant reaches 20 lbs. before 1 yr. of age a convertible infant/toddler seat rated for up to 30 lbs. rear facing should be used.

- Toddlers/preschoolers should stay in a car seat until they are 4 yrs. and 40 lbs.

- Kids 4-8, roughly 40-80 lbs. should ride in a booster seat.

- Is your car seat tethered and to a proper tether anchor?

- A 5 point harness is the safest choice. Over head shield car seats are prone to head injuries in the event of an accident.

I wish every parent was as conscientious about their children's safety. I still see so many children running loose in their car's... jumping from the front to back seat and the parents don't do a darn thing about it. It would totally freak me out to think that any of my children weren't strapped in... even at their ages.

I still have my kids in highbacks also. Dd is only 43 lbs and not high enough to be in a regular seat belt. She will probably stay in one until next year. i think she is the only one in her class that still uses one. I'm like you-better safe than sorry.

my kids freak out if some else isn't belted in. I caught flack for putting mine on as I pulled out of the garage. LOL. I wanted to tell them to lighten up but just kept my mouth shut.

My dd still rides in a booster seat. She is 8.5 and weighs 50 lbs. But she loves it and doesn't complain. I think she likes sitting higher.

When we have a younger rider with us, she shares her seat. But in our van, she can pick where she wants to seat. So far, she likes her seat. It is a matching chair that goes with my decor. That uses the regular seat beat.

I wonder when she will pick a different seat. But for now she is happy. Kids at school haven't said anything to her that I know of. I all ways point out how nice it is to peak at her in the review (since she is sitting higher) and how nice it must be for her to look out. Plus she gets very car sick. I think looking out helps her??

I can't complain, She likes it. I wonder when the kids will make fun of her. So far... So good....

That's the one thing I always liked about car seats... they made them just high enough for the kids to be able to see out of their window. Without them... they couldn't see a thing. 8o

As long as she's happy... I wouldn't change a thing. Do you think the other kids would really tease her about sitting in a car seat? I wonder if they would even notice. 8o

DD still uses a 5 point harness. I bought one that is designed for older kids because I've read that a car seat is preferable to a booster seat. She's 6 in K, average height and weight. Because she is over the 4 yr and 40 lb rule in WA, We don't transfer the seat if she sits in DH's truck but that is rare anyways. I think OR changed their rules recently and you need to use a carseat or booster up to age 7. Not possitive about the age but I think that is it.

My dd (6) is using the high back booster without the straps - just the seatbelt - it gives her enough "boost" so that the seatbelt hits her in the right place. I had seen too many articles that say that children can get seriously injured by the seatbelt if it is not hitting them at the right place.

I am one of few in my circle of friends that still uses the booster - dd hasn't said anything - it's just what we do.

One morning, the school security officer poked her head in the car window after I let dd out, and thanked me for using the booster - sooo many parents don't. And it boils my blood to see a little one riding in the front seat of the car - we've told dd she will be at least 12 before she is to be up front.

Both of my dks still ride in the boosters, too. Ds will be 5 this week and he weighs around 50 pounds, but I think it's recommended that kids be in them until they are 80 pounds. He doesn't complain and once in a while he will just ride buckled in on the seat, but I am not ready to do that permanently. I just feel like he is safer in the booster, especially on the highway. Besides that I don't want a battle with youngest ds about why he still has to be in one. :D

My ds (6) is in a high back booster with the regular seat belt. He is about 55 lbs. and 4 ft. even. The younger 2 are still in harness. Most of ds's friends still use the booster also. Stick to your convictions.
