View Full Version : Anyone ever had a cortisone injection?

I was in a car accident in November and am still dealing with the lasting effects. My neck, shoulders and back and healing slowly. I really injured my hand (not fracture, they think ligament or tendons...they are not sure), and am having a lot of pain with it. I wear a splint when I am uncomfortable, but I don't want to depend on it so I remove for part of the day. The problem is that I am right handed and it is of course my right hand that I injured. I have been going for physiotherapy and massage therapy regularly since the accident, and have received ultra sound treatments and laser treatments...now my physiotherapist thinks I should go for cortisone injection. I am a little hesitant because I don't know anyone else who has had this done. Looking for a little input from anyone. Thanks
My 10 year old (9 at the time) had to have a cortisone shot in his rump when we were in Jamaica last June. He took an alergic reaction to "something", and no cream or the antibiotic would take the itch away. I understand it is a mighty painful injection :o( but it helped him almost immediately. Good luck.
Meant to say "antihistimine", not "antibiotic".

I believe my uncle had cortisone shots for his back and I think it ended up doing wonders for him. He was completely laid up for a while and after these shots he was actually able to get up and walk. Sorry I don't have more info than that. Hope you find some relief for your hand. :(

Marla, when I was in a car accident, I had physical therapy and all the other treatments you have had and I ended up having a cortisone injection in my back and it really helped. It does wear off, though. I think it's just something to ease the pain while it's trying to heal. (?)

Sorry to hear about your accident. My sister had one for her heal and another time for her elbo... She said they hurt like a son of a gun... I never had one myself but I'll take her word for it. LOL Good luck... I hope if you decide to do this it helps. It did for my sister.

Never heard of them before, but I ust wanted to tell you that I hope that you are feeling better soon.
Marla,
I've had cortisone shots before for heal spur pain in both feet. In one foot it worked like a charm. In the other I ended up having to take 3 shots (which my doctor said was the maximum he could give me) and it was about 18 months before I was pain free. I do remember they were painful, but hey, if you've given birth, what's a little shot right?
Best of luck to you, I know how long term pain can wear on you psyche.

I was in a car accident almost 9 years ago and really messed up my back. The doctor sent me for physio therapy, massage therapy and any other therapy he could think of. He suggested cortizone injections but only as a last choice because they are apperently very painful. I ended up going to a chiropractor, on a friends suggestion and it really helped. I still go one a month but my back only bothers me occasionally now. I have been told by the doctor that this would still be happening even with the shot. The only way to totally relieve it would be to have surgery and fuse part of my spine. No thanks, I'll stick to the Chiropractor. A friend of mine had a cortizone shot in her shoulder and agreed that it was very painful but helpped a lot. She had to get another one about three months later and one three months after that but has been ok for almost a year now. She says that she would recommend it but compares the pain to childbirth. Hope everything works out for you. I'd be lost without my right hand.

Hello. I'm 19 years old. I was in a car accident with my family 5 months ago, and we are still suffering from it. Someone ran a red light and hit us at 50mph head on. They can't find what is actually wrong with me in the MRI or X-rays, so they decided to give me facet joint injections of cortisone. I had the preceedure done the other day. Let me tell you, it hurts like nothing ever before. I'm not going to lie, I was given vicodin, valium, and an IV of a sedative, and it was still the most painfull preceedure I have ever had before. Of course they were injecting it directly into my spine, and had a lot of deep tissue to go through. And afterwards it only gets worse for a few days. I feel like a bus hit me, backed up to see what they ran over, didn't see me under the wheel and went over me again. (I know, not very funny, but that is the best way i can describe it.) HOWEVER, the longrun gets much better. I would recommend having the proceedure done, because a couple days of pain isn't anything compared to a couple years in my point of view. Keep your head up, and have it done. If i can do it, i'm sure you can as well. I give you my best wishes and goodluck.
I hope this helps you in making a decision, and lets us know how it goes! :)

I didn't either! I wonder how far back it actually does go?

Take my word too, it does hurt in the heel. I've had on shot in my left heel and 3 in my right for heel spur pain. I was told 3 was the limit on my heels. Thankfully 3 was the magic number for my right cause I have not had any more pain since. Can't tell you if they are painful elsewhere. Good luck.
LOL, I didn't even check the date. I also responded to the Pain, then went on to read the rest of the posts, only to see I posted something similiar but my response was, "What the hell, that's not what I just said". Glad to know I'm not totally losing my mind.
