Ok, I have NEVER bought a whole chicken before. Until now.
Now, I don't know what to do with it!!
Does it have 'stuff' in it that has to come out, like turkeys do?
I know I will have to take the skin off (yuck) but then I don't know how to cook it.
I had visions of roasting it somehow in the crockpot - anyone cook whole chickens??
I know I sound like a dufus, but hey! If I don't ask, I won't learn!!

When i buy a whole chicken, I usually roast like a turkey, in the oven.. Cant remember if there is stuff in it or not, I think there usually is...
I have never tried doing it in a crockpot though...Good luck..hope it turns out great for you.

I've also just thrown mine in the oven and cooked it just like I would a turkey. I also can't remember if there was any "stuff" in it... 8o it's been such of a long time since I cooked a whole chicken... I usually just get chicken breasts... Good luck... I hope it turns out real good. :)

I have put a whole chicken in a crockpot...can't remember about the innards, but it'll be obvious when you unwrap it. I put in on top of an inverted strainer, to keep it out of the drippings, for a low fat chicken meal. It's a little bland that way...I might try putting it in the crockpot with some chicken broth or bouillon cubes/granules and water. Add mushrooms and green onions. Pour white wine over it all and cook until done. Did that with chicken breasts last night and it was great. You can use the drippings to combine with evaporated milk and cornstarch to make a gravy, or just use the drippings.
Also, my in-laws make an incredible chicken noodle soup with chicken cooked in the crockpot.
There will be the inards in there! LOL You don't have to take off the skin before you cook it..leave it on, it keeps it very moist.
This is a wonderful recipe for either the oven or crockpot
Rinse the chicken and pat dry.
Rub a little olive oil and mayonaise all over the skin.
Take several lemons or limes and squeeze the juice all over the chicken, then toss them inside the cavity.
Take fresh rosemary and crush it and spread all over and then toss inside
Pepper the whole thing..also season well with some cajun seasoning.
Place in crockpot breast side down and cook on low all day
or
bake in oven 350 for about an hour and half to two hours.

I laughed too... It reminded me of the very first Turkey I made. My mom had told me to take all the "stuff" out and as much as I dug... I couldn't find anything... 8o When they came over for dinner she asked if I had found and taken the gizzard/neck out... and I told her that they had evidently forgotten to put them in there. LOL Well..... you wouldn't believe 8o what we found when the turkey was done/cut. Ugh!!! Sometimes those little boogers are hard to find but now I keep digging until they're found.... cause I know their in there somewhere. LOL

Wow... Thanks Anne! I haven't bought a whole turkey in a long time but this looks really good. :licklips: If you've done it in both, which do you think it turns out best in... the oven or the crockpot?
Diane...
Thanks annE??? an E on the end of my name????????????? shame on you!!!! LOL
It probably browns more in the oven, and is more moist in the crockpot. Since I take the skin off after cooking, I don't care if it's brown! LOL
oh, and another thing...loosen the skin a little and stick some seasonings and rosemary twigs right under the skin.
You won't believe how great your kitchen will smell with that rosemary baking!

Dh was laughing at me... said I looked like a surgeon digging around on that poor turkey with all my little tools. :biglaugh: Yeah... those cooked innards don't look none too appetizing. I even tried giving them to the dog and she wouldn't go anywhere near it and usually she'd eat just about anything... LOL Does that tell you anything? :)

8o oops... sorry about that E!!!!! LOL My neices name is Ann too and she spells her's with an e... LOL That's the ONLY excuse I can come up with right now... :biglaugh:
I'm going to have to try your recipe... it really does sound good. :) I'm also not very good about the "cutting" process either, but while I was trying to look up some recipes I found one on "how to cut a whole chicken"... I'll have to print their directions out... otherwise lord knows what that poor thing will look like by the time I'm done with it. LOL
Diane...
ok..you are forgiven this time! ;)
I can't cut a raw chicken to save my soul, but cooked ones aren't to hard..just start at the top of the breast bone and angle down.

yeah... it S8ounds easy enough... until you actually go to cut it. LOL Maybe I'll sic dh at it... he could probably do a much better job at it than me... and if he doesn't than it's his fault and not mine. LOL

Thank ya, thank ya, thank ya!!!
My mouth is watering now!! I'm headed to the kitchen to get that bird cleaned out (yuck) and in the oven.
I'll let ya know how it turns out.
I would be totally clueless too! Maybe I should impress dh and cook a whole chicken Ann's way. I think I could do that (with gloves, lol!). I can't stand the feel of raw meat of any kind! Ack!
Ya'll are too funny. It's not like you have to excavate it, just pull the bag out and then rinse it under the sink. :)
