after reading Brichards post about "Spiderman"....and hearing from another mother the other day, how much her 6 year old loved "Spiderman" it got me to thinking....how many of you take the Rating for a movie into consideration before you see it with your kids?

I have been so worried about "Scooby Doo, the MOVIE" being rated PG, which it is now....I probably will take them to see it...but am leary, about it...WHY THE PG rating? Sexual content? swear words? ARGH...."Hey Arnold, the movie" is PG too....WHY?.... I am kinda picky on what movies they see and what cartoons they watch...

Iis it just me? I am just curious....my girlfriend in CALIFORNIA thinks I am too stern... oh well....just wondering how many other are "stern" too.....

I am pretty strict. You just have to decide where you draw the line. Sometimes you might want to preview first.

If movie is rated PG or PG-13 it always states why- "underage drinking, language, sexual content..." things like that. You need to determine what you want your kids to be exposed to or not exposed to. My ds, 6, wants to see Spiderman. We'll rent it and watch it (probably dh and I first) and then see what we think before we let him watch it. My dh is much less "stern" aobut movies/tv shows than I am, but my kids are ok! LOL :)

I use my own judgment, Renee. This is a personal decision, imo. It's all about what is acceptable to you personally.

Everyone is different. Brief, partial (non-sexual) nudity is no big deal to me, but I can't stand name-calling or violence (unless it's silly slap-stick kind of stuff like in George of the Jungle). I would also prefer a "hell" or "damn" over "stupid" or "dufus" or "dork".

Spiderman is rated PG-13, so ds won't be seeing it, but I have a friend who took her 3- and 6-year-olds. Won't even consider a PG-13 movie, but PG is sometimes ok, imo (I pre-view them) and there are some G-rated shows and movies that I don't allow ds to watch (Rugrats, for example).

I like to go to www.kidsinmind.com to read about a movie in detail.

I really like Kidsinmind too, but the one thing you need to be careful about it that it REALLY breaks down the movie. You read a review and think "OMG, I won't send my kid to that!!" LOL Read a review of a couple of movies you have seen and that you were ok with just to get a rythmn of how they "talk".

When it comes to my dck's I never assume that anything is okay so I'll post the names of the movies I'd like the kids to watch for the week (quiet time) and if any of the parents are opposed to any of them... they let me know and that one get's put away. I always watch/preview the movies first... so there really haven't been any that I've been asked NOT to show. I've had dck's bring movies from home that I wouldn't let them watch... PG-13. 8o Everyone is different.

I'm like you Renee. I'm very particular about the movies my dks see. I also find myself going, "...so why IS it rated PG and not G?". I'm not big on swearing and nudity. My boys want to see Spiderman, but we're like JAK, we're going to wait for it to come to DVD and then preview it first. My boys are HUGE Star Wars fans, though, and dh is planning to take them to the new Star Wars movie. I guess it's a matter of personal choice. My ds2 (6 years) watches some movies in his after Kindergarten daycare program....one day he says to me.."Mom, I think I'd like to watch all of the Princess movies."8o Uh...ok son! WOW...never before been interested in Little Mermaid, Cinderella, etc, but now he kind of wants to watch them. I think all of the kids at day care have seen them and talk about them (classics, for goodness sake!). It was a cute comment.
