I have a couple of favorite brands, so I switch when I get tired of one. :) I usually trade off btwn Biolage, Back to Basics and Aveda.

I almost always buy something different when my shampoo runs out. It seems to make my hair "do" better. I bought some shampoo called MOP at my last hair appointment and I'm really liking it.

I alternate between two or three. Just like with deodorant/antiperspirant, you should change or alternate brands occasionally as your body naturally builds up a bit of a resistance to the same product over time and as a result, the product will end up not being as effective.

I also occasionally use baking soda to remove any product build-up (conditioner, mousse, gel, spray, etc.). As a hairstylist, my coworkers would gasp and insist that an expensive "clarifying" product is much better, but I totally disagree.

Baking soda is great stuff! LOL!

Wet and lather up your hair. Sprinkle baking soda into the lather (I put it in my hand first--about two tablespoonfuls) and work it into the lather. Rinse. Shampoo again (without the baking soda). You really have to shampoo that second time or your hair will feel slick from the baking soda (it doesn't rinse out completely). Then condition or do whatever you normally do.

Hi Mick!

Does it affect the colour at all? I use clarifying shampoo every now and then, but it is for colour treated hair.

It might fade it slightly (depending on the porosity of your hair, hair color, etc.)--it's hard to tell. But you only do it once a month or so--so you can try doing it a few days before you color.

I don't change my shampoo that often, but I do rotate my conditioners.
