View Full Version : car travel ideas wanted
ok, I know I am jumping the gun here...but since we are all driving across the US in a few months I have started a bag of goodies for the kids....7 and 5 when we go.....I have two clipboards that open up and store paper and crayons and stuff....I have some work books, coloring sheets, word searches for ds.....help....
any ideas  welcome....its a long drive....;)
This might be out of your expense, but we bought a tv/vcr that has an outlet for your car. I actually shipped it to NY last year for our trip to Cape Cod and it worked wonders!! We went to the library and rented 10 movies and the kids barely knew that we drove 8 hours.
Our car now has one built in, so we use the other one in our kitchen for the most part, but definitely worth the investment. I think they even make consoles now for the car for around $200. Then I would hit every garage sale in town for used movies to take with you. LOL
The TV/VCR is a great idea. I guess it doesn't bother the kids, but it makes me sick as a dog to watch TV while traveling. And I don't get car sick.

Monkey isn't into t.v. and doesn't last long for videos, but he really likes his leap pad (with headphones!) and I have also used a lap top computer for cd roms, too (with headphones! ;)).

I have a set of daycare parents who do a lot of traveling too and swear by the tv/vcr. Their kids use to whine/fight and complain constantly... and now they sit sooooooooo still and are sooooooo quiet. LOL They always rent or buy new/different movies that they have not yet seen... as it keeps their attention longer than a movie they've already watched. I sure wish they had had things like this when my kids were little... it certainly would have come in handy. :)

I go to Goodwill and stock up on little toys, make little toy sets and put them in plastic bags. If I notice the kids are getting a little winey I through them a baggy full of "new" cars or plastic dinasours. My kids also seem to like those big fuzzy posters and markers. They also have kid-friendly tapes and walkmans. (We have the Story of Star Wars on tape. That's good for a couple hours.)

We take an assortment of video-type games. Leap pad, leap pond, game boy, etc.
They also like markers and crayons. The Color Wonder markers are great because they only write on special paper so they won't get it on the seats.
If you allow eating in the car, baggies of mixes (dry cereal, m&m's, peanuts, popcorn, pretzels, or what you have to add) are favorites of my kids.
Cd's with headphones are great too.
Good Luck!!

Exactly along the lines I was thinking of......LOL
But I'm not into drugging my kids either. So how about tranquilizers for Renee and let the rest of the family fend for themselves? Oh wait, she LIKES her dh. He probably never accidently left a kid at home!! LOL

ROFL!!
That's the way to travel!! Pull a "Home Alone" but leave plane tickets on the kitchen counter and they can fly out by themselves!
LOL!
