View Full Version : No School - No Activities Rule?

Do you have a hard and fast rule about staying home from school and not attending extracurricular activities?
Dd has a cough that has kept her up for 2 nights in a row, so I am keeping her home today for some rest, maybe she can catch a nap this afternoon. However, she is scheduled to start a new riding sesssion at 4:30 today, something she has been waiting for since last fall! I am going to let her go. I know some may disagree with this, but just wondering what your rule is or is it a case by case decision? It is with me, depends on why they are home, etc, but I know some people with a strict policy, if their dks stay home, they stay in.
What do you do?

I am not in that situation quite yet, but I think I would tend to go on why they stayed home. My mom was always like that with us and we never took advantage of her "policy". :) Hope your dd has fun at the riding session today!

My kids arent really into activitys yet but I would think case by case basis is a good way to go. The only problem is if the school sees her out ya might catch some grief.
We are pretty much case by case. When ds was heavy into his croup probs, he missed a ton of school mainly due to lack of sleep and the fact that his cough was so disruptive..I pretty much let him participate in the things he felt up to. Now, dd tends to fake sick alot, so we are very strict with her when she stays home so that she will learn that it's not fun to play sick.
its a situation I haven't had yet, but I agree with AnnW...case by case, same reasoning, with kids faking sick, and all...My brother used to fake sick and still get to go to Little League and that's not right....LOL...

I agree, my mom was the same way and I never took advantage of it either.
Nothing hard and fast. You really should take it case by case. Even though they don't think we can tell, we can tell when they are faking.
My ds was out with strep a few days, but toward the end we, went to play pactice and I even helped them run lines for an upcoming play because rehearsal was critical.

If I were to keep my children home from school during the day and they had something the needed/wanted to attend that evening... I would allow them to go as long as they felt better. That would also mean that I would expect them to go back to school the next day too... no more, "I'm TOO sick" stuff. LOL Sometimes a day at home to rest is all they need... I have found that when kids are sick they don't want to do too much of anything anyway but sleep... so when they start asking and begging to go it must mean their feeling better.

Haven't had to deal with the situation yet but I'm sure it's coming. I would probably have to take it situation by situation, depending why they were home in the first place.
I only tried playing sick once as a child and ended up getting sick for real, that was no fun. I was sure God was punishing me and never tried it again.
