I'm clueless on where to look for ideas, but if you find any, let us know - I for one, have a dd going into 1st grade in the fall.
Good luck and I'll see if I come across anything helpful........

I'm not sure but I think when I was in school my teacher use to make up crossword puzzles and word searches with the weeks Vocab. I've never personally worked with older kids I do 3-5 year old so we don't do alot of spelling yet. Thanks goodness because I can't spell. LOL. Good Luck!

How old are the kids? Boggle jr is a terrific spelling game. Maybe you could create a class size version of it where you put a picture up on the board, hand a sheet with a certain number of spaces, show them the letters they have to work with and voila.....

for example :doggie: _ _ _ ogd
the answer is...... dog

Chalkboard Spelling Bee

Every student stands by their desk with a chalkboard in front of them. Teacher gives a word. All write on the chalkboard. At signal from teacher, students turn boards towards the teacher. Check and correct. Students with correct boards remain standing for the next round.

This is extremely labor intensive, but for my son I'd cut out the letters for his spelling words from those fun foam sheets using an Ellison die cut machine. Then I'd print the spelling word out and laminate it. Each word and the letters that went with it were put into a snack size baggie. He liked matching the letters to the word card in the bath tub, but if you had a water table it would work, too. Or, just using the letters without water. It's the same idea as Marla's Boggle Jr. suggestion, except this is hands on.

This is a game I played when I taught 3rd grade but can be used with any age (that can spell!) We used the words from their weekly spelling list.
It's called Sparkle. The children stand in a circle. The teacher gives the word and indicates which child should start. The first child says the first letter of the word. The next child says the second letter, etc. until the word is spelled. The child next to the one who said the last letter says "sparkle" (this indicates that this is the end of the word) The next child sits down and is out. For example the word "cat"
Child #1- "C"
Child #2- "A"
Child #3- "T"
Child #4-"Sparkle"
Child #5- sits down

If a child gives the wrong letter, s/he sits down and the next child must give the correct letter.

This game goes pretty fast so you can go quite a few rounds. None of the kids I worked with ever got upset about having to sit out. It was fun for them all. Plus they all had to pay attention and spell the words in their head in case others missed their letters.

Good luck!

I make individual letter cards for all my kids along with blank word frames with space for 3, 4, and 5 letter words. (I teach kdg.) Most all our words are cvc pattern. Consonant letters one color, vowels another. I also have a larger set for me that works in the pocket chart on the board. When we first start spelling it's a group effort, then we pass out only the word frames and letters needed for words we'll work on for a particular day and everyone tries. If they are unable to do it, they copy from my example. Then as they get the hang of it the activity moves to centers where they get more practice if they are having trouble or I'll add harder words for those who are ready to move on. It's one of their favorite activities.

Based on the book I'll Teach my Dog 100 Words I set up a center with words written on laminated dog bones. Kids read them, then write them on a sheet of paper with lines drawn on a dog house. They love that center too. To kick that center off I always bring my dog, read the book, and share what words my dog knows (always on the 100th day of school). You could do something similar and program the bones with weekly spelling words.

Also use Boggle Jr., indiviual chalk boards, magna doodles, play doh with letter stamps, magnet boards with letters, stamp & spell, lots of things that aren't the same old pencil & paper stuff.

They are like cookie cutters on long dowel like rods. I have an upper case, lower case, and number set.

I take construction paper and cut it into card playing size. I write the spelling word on 4 of them. I do all the spelling words that way. Then we play fish with them. The boys has always loved this game. I did this with my 20 year old son when he was young and he also loved it.

I hope this will help you some.

Love the "fish" game Gwen. I'm going to get started making sets for upcoming school year.
