Hi, I'm new to this messageboard. I am currently a 23 yr old college student studying to be an elementary school teacher, preferably 4th or 5th grade and I just started working at a Catholic school as a Teachers Asst in their Before/After School Program.
I decided to check this place out b/c I would really like some helpful ideas for the beginning of the school year activities. Any ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated.
I don't have any ideas, I just wanted to say Welcome to the board! :)

I work with the upper elementary/middle school age. Which I guess is anywhere from 4th to 6th grade. I'm usually quite creative and can think about things on the spot, but I am drawing a blank.

Welcome to the boards. I too am going to school to be an elementary teacher, but after subbing for a while, I have found that I really like the middle school grades alot too.
Here is something that I did with a 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade group once when the teacher miscalculated her plans. I had them go through the alphabet and write one good thing about themselves starting with every letter. Of course on the letter "X" and "Z", some of the answers were silly, but it is okay, it was a fun type exercise. (i.e. A- Athletic, B- Brave, C- Caring, etc...)
Another activity to do with older children is to give them a letter, and then tell them to come up with a story, but that letter can't be in it. A fun way to do it and keep them on their toes is to have one person say a sentence and then the next person has to add on to the sentence before keeping the story going. (i.e. You give them the letter "n". The first child might say "I was at the beach", then the second child might say, " I saw a fish" it keeps going, but no one can use the letter "n", so I saw a sn ail would not work because snail has an "n" in it.)
If I come up with anymore, I will let you know.

Welcome!!!
I'm assuming that Omaha is Nebraska?? I'm not aware of another Omaha anywhere else.
If so, that's great to have another Nebraskan on the board!!
I'm a mom of 5 kids and I recently started working at a daycare. I taught elementary school (3rd grade) quite a few years ago. My dream is to open my own preschool.
I don't know of any activities. I'd have to think on it.
Hope to see you posting a lot more!:)

Yes it is Omaha, Nebraska. But I know that there is a Omaha, Texas and an Omaha, Arkansas too.
