I noticed that many have thought "set the table" means serving the dinner AT the table ala "family style" rather than putting the food on the plate and then serving it.
Ironically, this is actually a point of contention with dh's parents and myself.

SO....

do you serve your dinners

Family Style (each dish served in it's own dish, and then put on the table to be served and passed)
or
Plated (all the foods served from the stove directly onto the plate)

Everyone puts their own food on their plates... from the bowls of food that are on the table. I guess that's considered family style. LOL During lunch with the dck's though... I put their food on their plates, otherwise some of them would try to get by, by taking nothing but what they liked the most and leave the rest... and/or not eat anything at all. (picky)

Diane...

Most of the time, I fill mine and DK's plates from the stove and Dh does his. Once in awhile I put everything onthe table.

Same for me! (heck...sometimes I even fill dh's plate  and then think to myself, "what AM I doing????" LOL!) I guess, thinking back...that I grew up this way, at least until we were 10-12ish years old.

LOL!! I sometimes do dh's plate, too and he acts like it is the hugest treat and nicest thing for him to be able to just come in and sit down and be "served". :crazyroll

Family style most of the time except when we're having something like fajitas or salad bar in which case everyone wants to arrange their own plates. I rarely serve everyone's plate from the stove, but then my kids are all 12 and up. DH usually mixes the salad prior to dinner and serves out the meat at the table. Wow, when I think of it, really old-fashioned. But I do like for everyone to be seated before the food is served out, and to say grace, so I guess that's the main reason food is placed on platters or bowls and put on the table.

My mother-in-law, an old-fashioned Italian lady, serves everybody out and we have the hardest time getting her to actually sit down with us. She'll sit for grace and then jump up again and serve some more!

I don't look at "plating" the food as me serving anyone or that my kids might be younger, I look at the NUMBER of plates I have to wash!!!! LOL

My dishwasher may be my most treasured household appliance. LOL But I still wash all the pots and pans, and usually the serving bowls....because they're big. So it doesn't really cut my workload or add to it either way. Of course family style doesn't preclude an occasional pot on the table. I just look at it as conservation. LOL

:biglaugh: so your MIL would like you to serve it all on it's own plater then let everyone else take what they want....fine if she does the dished LOL...

thats why I only serve it that way for company...plus it looks nice...;)

I wonder how much the 'plated' has to do with children's ages. Mine are all 12 and up and jeez, I can't remember if we used to do it differently when they were younger.

I DO remember the dog would hang out underneath the high chair, in hopes of flung food....

I think it might have more to do with what our parents did. My mom always (still does) plate the food (we like it to look pretty! LOL) DH's mom has always served it family style. It was kind of hard for him to get used to the idea of plating it. To me family style is a giant waste of dishes! LOL

Stove to plate. dk's serve themselves depending what we are having.

We do ours stove to plate also. We usually eat in front of the TV though, so it is pointless to do family style.
