I just got a knock on the door from this freshman college kid saying he has to meet 1000 new people and rate him on his public speaking. I said-sure, come on in and I'll rate you. He banters back and forth and tries to come on to me (GAG!) and then I ask him where I can rate him. Well, he pulls out a slip and then a sheet and tells me I have to buy some magazines first before I can rate him. These magazines are really expensive and a rip off. I ask him the price of one, he starts writing down an order than tells me (after asking him 3 times) how much was the magazine. Well its 19.95 plus $5..00 handling charge. I said the price/value ratio wasn't worth it eventhough I wanted to help him out. Then he goes onto a voucher deal (spend $25 get $10 back) and he wasn't to clear on the rules, so I said no. THAN he wanted me to donate the magazine to a hospital and this was for AIDs research. I started getting irritated because he was relly laying it on thick and I couldn't believe I got this far with him. I told him he has to go and that I couldn't help him because Im on a tight budget and he said "so you don't want to help out a college student huh?" and I told him he will have to do it just like everyone else does-student loans etc.
This irked him and started going off on me and saying he works 12 hours a day on this and he has it much harder than I ever did "probably" blah blah.. He ended this all by saying "thanks for nothing". Boy am I pissed and shut the door on him.

Can you believe the lines they use nowadays to get their pathetic little bodies in the door? First he used the line he would get a $15,000 bond for school if he get 30,000 points on his speech rating; than it was Aids research and than its his poor college career.

Have any of you gotten this yet?

SCAM! SCAM! SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!
we got them selling mags around Christmas saying "hey, my folks live a few blocks over (yea, like in New York!) and I am in a contest and will get scholarship money blah blah blah

Ok-I never said I wasn't an idiot!!! Actually, he looked as if he weighed the same amount as me. I could take him. LOL

I know-that was just a stupid thing on my part. I did see his permit, so it was as legit as its going to get. After he got mad at me, I did worry that he might come back, but I don't think so now. I got my mace ready!! LOL

Thank you AnnW. I thought I was going to have to let Amy have it when I read her post, but I think you did it for me!!

I have had those magazine salesmen come to my door before and they are slick with the talk! That irritates me as much as the vacuum cleaner guys and the people who stand in busy intersection asking for donations or selling things. I can't believe that a children's hospital would ask college kids to walk around busy intersections collecting money. Can you say dangerous?? I've gone off on a tangent now haven't I?

Amy, no no!

Yeah... I agree with the other's when they said you shouldn't have let him in the house. When somebody comes knocking at my door... I won't let them in my house unless I personally know them. I don't understand how these people would even expect us to just open up our doors and let them in... especially the way things are now adays. You can't trust anybody!!!!

Alright Amy sice everyone else has already given you heck for letting him in, I won't say anything. I will just sympethize with you. I have never seen anything like that however I get pushy German furniture salesman all the time. I think that you should report him tosome one too. That would tick me off a lot too.

I won't give you heck either (Ann did a great job at it! LOL!), but I agree with everyone else. I wouldn't have let him in.

I use the peep hole and if I don't recognize them, I don't answer. If I do happen to answer (if I'm expecting someone else and don't look), I open the main door and make them scream through the glass door like Ann! LOL! Then I shake my head and close the door.

We get "art students" coming in to sell art at our office all the time and I just say, "NO! We aren't interested!" They're very pushy and snotty when you cut them off, too.

I really hate anything door-to-door--sales/polls/etc.

Most who show up at my door are Brownies, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and kids funraising for their schools. ( no one too threatening) Lately schools are encourages the kids to just go to people they know and not door-to-door.

Amy - Do you know what college he was from? Do you think he was legit and would you feel comfortable reporting him to the school? I think he was inappropriate and a poor representation of the school/program.

I usually keep the door locked and don't answer it unless I know who is there. I am so bad about locking the door by habit that I lock it as soon as I shut it once our company comes in...I think they think I'm a little loony when they try to leave and they are locked in! LOL! When we are downstairs it would be difficult to hear anyone come in and I don't need anyone sneaking in! :nervous: I will answer it when kids come to the door selling candy, cookies, etc. :licklips: LOL!

I'm not THAT far behind you! Guess I'm not such a wipper snapper afterall. :bigcry: I have called the police on the "party house" next door!!! The group of college girls in there right now got in trouble with us at the beginning of the school year and we haven't had problems since. :) Too often I tolerated stuff and it only got worse, so now I bite it in the butt right away! LOL!

Most of the schools here have banned door to door sales altogether. :thumb:

They tell our kids NEVER to go door to door but to sell only to friends or relatives. I like that a lot better than having them go door to door. :)

Consider me reprimanded!!! LO

He looked like a little high school dweeber and didn't feel threatened by his presence at all. As stupid as I am sometimes, you have to consider that I grew up in a wrestling/physical family. I was always the weebil they tried to wrestle to the ground. LOL I learned to handle the big boys at an early age. My dh even remarks on how well I can defend myself. With that aside, I would never let a grown man in or anyone that has the potential to threaten my family. The only people who come here are the UPS man or local highschool kids who are fundraising.

I promise to never do that again. Am I off the hook yet? LOL

Amy/Co

Two things:

#1. I have been fooled by a gentle looking soul and he almost killed me. It sounds like you got the message about not letting someone into your home. Great.

#2. The magazine sales technique that you referred to is used all the time where I live. I finally gave in once and ordered a magazine in an attempt to check the legitimacy of the company. I made sure to write down all info I could about the company and then as a test I sent a request to cancel my subscription. Two weeks later my check was sent back to me. No questions, no harassment.

The thing that bugs me about the kids selling is they always look disheveled and they smell like cigarettes.
I know there are better organizations out there that benefit kids. My hunch is the magazine thing is just a way to get you on a mailing list rather than a program designed to raise school funds or help underprivilaged kids.

Stay safe whatever you do.
