Our homeschool support group is going to do community service and we have some good ideas, but I was wondering if anyone else had other suggestions that would be good for 4-7 yos.

Here's what we have so far:
Collect canned foods for families in need.
Coat drive.
Christmas Caroling at a nursing home.
Clean our streets--collect litter.
Create art and take it to patients in the cancer ward.
Deliver food for Meals on Wheels.
Collect and distribute batteries for smoke detectors (and create a flyer to remind people to do it).

We're also looking into adopting a grandparent and working with mentally retarded citizens.

Any other suggestions?

Is there a park that you could garden/weed?
One year, our brownies made cookies and took them to several fire stations in our neighborhood..the firemen loved that!

time your battery thing with right before daylight savings time switch, that's usually what they tell people to use as a reminder

Do you have a Ronald McDonald house nearby? They are always in need of dinners, or new toys and books.
Collect hygeine supplies for women's shelter....
Collect gently used books/toys for women's shelter.
Carrolling for cans is being done here..... about a week before the scheduled carrolling is to be done, flyers are handed out in particular neighborhoods that you are coming carrolling for cans on a certain night. Neighbors are asked to have cans of food set out or to hand out when the carrollers arrive - then donate the food to the local food bank.
Donate time at the local animal shelter - to excercise the animals, etc.

We have a drive for pet food to be delivered to the animal shelter. We also do shoebox full of gifts for kids overseas.

Amy, where do you send the shoeboxes?

We always have a mitten tree towards the beginning of winter, where everyone is asked to bring mittens, hats and scarfs for those who can't afford them. The school then donates them to those in need.

Around Christmas, we also have a toy/food drive where families are asked to donate toys and food to be donated to shelters.

The school usually sponsors a family in need, and donates clothes, food and toys.

I was hoping you wouldn't ask because I forgot. LOL I will call dd's school on Monday to ask. I want to say it called the Samaritan's Purse or something like that. I'll let you know. :)

I was thinkig you could do some kind of baking service...where you guys baked fresh treats and brought them to some place like an adult home like on sunday! Like a special sunday brunch.I'm sure the patients there would really love it.

How about the Adopt A Highway program? You are only responsible for cleaning it twice a year and the kids could drive past and see their name/group name on the sign - it would give them a sense of pride/excitement......

That just reminded me of a Seinfeld episode...did you see the one where Kramer adopted a part of the highway and was obsessive in taking care of it???
