Any suggestions for toddler teacher is DIRE STRESS!?
I have a three yr old in my class who has the worst case of seperation anxiety that I or any of my collegues have ever seen. He SCREAMS for his mother ALL DAY, 5DAYS A WEEK, for the past 4 weeks. we are at our wits end, and the other children in our care are suffering. His mother thinks he will adjust and does not seem overly worried about it. I love my job, but this child makes me want to make a career change!!!
Someone please Help!

Danielle--I've heard of kindercare, how do you like it? Is it your first child care experience? If so, be prepared to be sick until next summer!!!

Danielle~ First off...welcome to IB it's a great place. I've never worked at Kindercare...I know people who have and they liked it... I have worked at other large centers like kindercare and some smaller centers and I found that I have personally perfer the smaller centers....I found the smaller centers to be alittle less stressful

Good luck and let us know how it's going!

Jilly.bien~ Welcome also to IB!
I also had a child exactly like the one you desribed....she didend up adjusting after a very long time and some trial and error.

What I found to work with her was everyone had to back off...too much attenction stressed her out.

What I ended up doing is since I was with her most the day we agreed that I would be the one to work with her. We got a rotine where when mom dropped off in the morning I would take her from mom and we would wave goodbye.

Then as the day goes on if she needed conforted I would be the one to do it. I found that the set routine helped.

Well good luck and keep us updated!!!!!!!

Thanks for the advise vea...the child never adjusted, and my director explained to his mother that his best intrest was in the whole of the class, and it was taking it's toll on the room. Other children who are potty trained were having constant accidents, nap schedueles were thrown off, and alot of acting out at home the whole room was coming apart at the seams! I think the directors decision to suggest other care was prompted by many parents complaints. It's rare I've been told, but some children aren't ready for care at 2.5!
The mom was so mad. She took her anger out on me, and ruined my week. She said some very hurtful things, in a very loud voice in front of the other children. My co teacher had to go to the office in the middle of it and get the director for my defence. It was quite a scene. All of the other toddlers were hugging me after she left. I'm not sure if they understood what was going on, but they could tell my feelings were hurt :(
Today was our first day without this child, and I can't tell you what a difference it was! My class is back. I was anticipating rebuilding our routine, and gaining back the children's respect. But I didn't have to, they were completely back to normal. We were actully able to do many activities. You could hear a pin drop in the room, all of the children were so busy and involved in their work. It was really great. I do miss my little friend, I only wish I was able to get to know him better.
thanks again for the help. I'll be in touch:D jillybien

Hi Danielle!

I have been working at kindercare for about three months now. I am the pre-k teacher and I like the experience I am having!
What age group do you teach? Are you enjoying yourself? Hope to hear back from you. In the meantime, continue to change lives!

Always pray, hope, forgive, & love.
