My son's gymnastic teacher also teaches the area high school cheerleaders, and her daughter is a cheerleader. I mentioned one day that I had been a male cheerleader in high school, and before you know it... I've been a new helper at cheerleading practice!

I really don't know how to do much. When I did it, we just helped out during basketball season. All of the guy cheerleaders were either football players and/or wrestlers. We were pretty concerned about our masculinity, so we just wanted to help out with pyramids, pop-up shoulder stands, and different lifts (chairs etc.)

Now I find myself coaching these guys doing it! I had not done anything since 1988, so I was surprised to have remembered what little I knew. It actually is kind of fun though. Some of these girls have never been in any builds and it is nice to see them overcome their sense of fear and actually enjoy themselves.

The instructor wants to teach me how to spot some of the flips that she isn't strong enough to do. If I do it I'll get paid about $10 per hour while getting a free gym membership (where they practice) and my kids can take class for free. I already have a gym membership, but just getting the kids classes paid for would make it worth it!

I must admit that I'd love to learn to do a back handspring like ds, so be ready for my "Brichard goes to the Hospital" post in the future! LOL

Sounds exciting! Be careful not to hurt yourself if you try the back handspring - Angie needs you!! :D

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Last year my dd had two male cheerleader's on her squad... and same as you they helped with all the heavy stunting that was done. All of the girls really appreciated having them there, otherwise they wouldn't have been able to do as many stunts as they did. It sounds like something that you would enjoy doing... good luck!!!

You need to talk to Fern... she's the gymnastics pro around here! Sounds like fun... but please, no "Brichard goes to the hospital" posts.... you're not in high school anymore!

Enjoy it, Brichard. Teach them about sportsmnaship and enthusiasm too. Coaching isn't for the faint-hearted. I'm sure you'll do a wonderful job. And don't forget to have fun!!

That's so cool Brichard, I know you will have lots of fun. Take it from experience here, even though what the kids are doing looks like fun - it doesn't feel fun the next day!!!!!!!!!!!Leave the backhandsprings to them.

Aw Mom... can't I try it at least once? :biglaugh:

I actually am still pretty sore still from Monday just from balancing the girls on my shoulders! They let me do my first front handspring with one of those big balls, so if I try the back handspring I'll be well spotted!

I hope you have fun Brichard, but quite honestly you couldn't pay me enough money to do that. I hear others make the same comment to me about teaching kdg. It takes all kinds to make the world go round.

I have to say at last week's ballgame they had 70 preK - 6th grade girls cheering after the mini camp that the hs cheerleaders put on. Of course I was zeroed in on my little ones. They were so cute. There were even 2 little kdg. boys who wanted to do it this year. And I have to say one little guy was a natural. They did a routine to "I Want Candy" and he had all the moves. It was too cute.

Our 6 yo ds loves going to cheer practice with his daddy. I asked him why he liked it so much and he said (while looking at me as if I were a moron) "high school girls?" LOL
