I've been cleaning out my magazine inventory, going through them for anything I might want to use later and ran across an article in Rosie magazine. Considering the fact that we're not too far away from implantable Global Positioning Devices for humans, would you get one implanted in your child? I would... without a doubt. I've actually thought of trying to find a person who could deal with the tech side of creating such a thing... then invent something that would send an alert when your child goes beyond a set distance, as determined by the parent. In the article, the author provides some wonderful insight and gives the name of a company who sells a product called Digital Angel. It comes in the form of a wrist watch or clip-on calculater-sized device. It costs $399.00 to purchase the device, then $29.99 a month for monitoring. I wouldn't purchase either of the items listed above, but if/when the come out with an implant (per the article, they're very close), I think I would get it implanted into dd provided it had been proven safe and wasn't exorbitant. They have something similar now, but the microchip must be scanned, no good if someone is abducted.
So, what do you guys think? Would you do it?

I think I would - I am a worrywart and have the attitude that it wouldn't do any harm and could actually help out in a horrible situation and you just never know, so why not? :tinysmile
It's surgery, putting something foriegn into my child's body.
I am probably naive, but I am just not that paranoid.

I don't think so. Not at this point, anyway.

No way! Can't say that I would.
:)
The concern I would have is the risk the abducted child would have when the culprit tries to find the device and remove it. I doubt they would follow sterile technique.

Good point, Jeff, but I think it's tiny and undectable once it's been placed under the skin.
For me, the risks of someone taking my daughter (especially now while I'm crippled!) far outweigh the risks of having the device implanted via day surgery. Even more so now that there was a report on the news last night that a man has been spotted filming children in MY NEIGHBORHOOD... he's even been seen filming through windows and sliding glass doors... now how someone has seen him doing that and didn't get the police on the case in time, I don't know, but I take things like that seriously... better safe than sorry. I never let dd play outside alone... not here, where there are soooo many people I don't know and someone is always moving in or out... to risky for me. Guess I'm a paranoid worry-wart!

I'd do it in a heartbeat if I knew it wouldn't hurt/harm my children in any way. If they were ever abducted... I'd certainly want to be able to find where they are ASAP, before anything happened to them. When you think about it, if Jacob Wetterling had been implanted with one of these... he probably would have been found (dead or alive) by now, and at least his parents would know for sure. If it doesn't hurt anything... why not? I'm not paranoid but you just never know.
Diane...
