I mentioned to my HS support group that it would be fun to go caroling and the next thing you know I'm in charge of it! 8o LOL! It's open to the entire organization in my area/region (via the newsletter) and I've already had three families I don't know call to say they want to do it. I've never done this before (just door to door for neighbors for fun as kids) and I'm wondering how I should do it.
I was thinking about sending fliers around the neighborhood a few days prior to the night we go caroling to kind of forewarn people that we'll be around. So hopefully they'll make an effort to be home and will be receptive and not turn all their lights off and pretend to be out! LOL!
Also, do you ring doorbells and sing or just bellow on the sidewalk? LOL! Do you go up to the door if they open it? I'm clueless here. AND I have to teach these kids the songs a cappella! That should be a real treat for everyone! ;)
Help me!!!
That's how great ideas are rewarded! LOL ;)
You will do a great job.
We used to do this with the scouts, it's fun. My neighbors did this one year and they did send out a flier telling (warning) everyone. (that really helped) You might get some cute holiday paper and print it on that. I would just ring the door bell and start singing. I would maybe do two songs per house..3 at the most AND not hard songs. If it were me, I would pick Jingle Bells and We Wish You a Merry Christmas..maybe Silent Night. The kids will get a little shy and they seem to like the "loud" songs.
What about going to a nursing home or retirement center in the area?

That's what I was going to say. Or maybe ask some of the people in your group if they know of any shut-ins that would really appreciate having some little ones come to visit and sing. :)

Thank you!!! I have a list of NINE songs! LOL! Glad I posted! ;) (I was going for simple and one verse, though!)
I'll do the flier for sure and keep it to two or three songs. Was going to do a craft-type thing during one of the two practice times and have the kids make simple bell instruments to shake. (?)
We actually are going to a nursing home to carol another day and we're making small gifts to take with us, too, so that will be fun. Just wondering about the door-to-door thing. I think it will be fun, but needed some ideas and tips!
Thank you!!!
sounds like fun Mickey......We did that with Indian Madians when I was a girl....One mother purchased some Felt like material and we cut the ends with Pinking shears to make our own scarfs for the occassion....
Sounds great Mick! As far as songs, time it, and try to limit it to no more than 5 minutes per door....think about 5 minutes can be a LONG time to stand there smiling while strangers are singing to you! LOL

That sounds cute, Renee! Was that the California version of a scarf or did you want them to match? ;) LOL!
Another great suggestion, Annie! LOL! I'm sure 5 minutes would feel like an eternity in that situation!

California verision fur sure....DUH... :biglaugh:
You'll do great Mic. Five or six songs is usually what we do (first verse only). We do get word out ahead of time about when we will be in the area. Those in the nursing homes really appreciate the caroling too. We always do the nursing homes, retirement home, and our shut-ins from church. It's always great fun. Then we have hot cocoa afterward.
