Well I survived the first day at the hospital. I actually had a great time. The nursing staff :nurse: was really great. They actually gave me a patient to work with. It was very weird for me. I have never done anything like this and they just said here is his files read up on him and then sit and talk with him see how his day is going and what he is thinking about. Oh and ask him how the voices are. 8o
That was a shocker I thought they would start me on something a little easier than schizophrenia. I also didn't think that I would be alone when working one on one with the patients on my first night. We had a great talk though.
My duties include a case or two a night and doing rounds checking all patients that are on suicide watch every 15 minutes and assisting during group therapy sessions. I also learned how to check basic vital signs. We had a great but long evening yesterday. I can't wait for next week. :D

Glad to hear your first day went well! Maybe they figure it's best just to let you dive right in and get the experience from the start.... sometimes that's a good thing! And it sounds like you handled it wonderfully!

Good for you for having such a good outlook on your first day.
I have a brother who is schizophrenic/paranoid, and I can remember him saying some pretty off the wall things at times.
I'm glad you have such a positive outlook and saw your first day as a good one! I'm SURE you made a difference in your patient's day. :)
Sounds interesting for sure...glad it went well. I volunteer Monday nights in the library at a mental hospital in our city and that's interesting enough for me :)
sounds like an intersting first day....

I don't mean it like it was a bad thing, I just didn't expect to have a patient the first day, I also would have figured that they would have me with someone who was there for detox or the patient with depression who was leaving the next day. It just would have seemed more logical to me. I did have a great time and can't wait for next Saturday.

Wow sounds like you had an interesting day... I probably would have fainted...Even though I am majoring in psych...I have absolutly no interest in doing that kind of work...I'd be affraid of doing something wrong,
