A couple times this year I've had extemely heavy periods. Last time I got as white a sheet. (That was yesterday and I am still recovering.) I got the shakes and I was so tired I could barely get out of bed. My doctor suggests that if it keeps happening to go on hormone pills. I don't know if I want to do that because it isn't every month. The only thing is if it gets too bad I could have to go to the emgerancy room for intravenous hormones, and I really can't afford to lose my energy like this. What something like this happens during finals? Has anyone here gone through this?

I never experienced anything like that, but I was thinking...did you get tested for anemia(sp?) . You might just need Iron pills.

Yeah, I was borderline so I did start taking iron pills.

I don't think I have ever heard of emergency hormones. Have they done any blood work or checked your hormone levels? Have they ruled out fibroids? Is the doc talking about going on birth control pills or some other kind of hormones?

My doctor just put me on the pill last month for very heavy, (Clots) periods. I would get very tired and couldn't stand up on one day of my period because the flow was so bad. It started out to be a few times a year, then when I finally mentioned it to the doctor it was every month. I just finished my first month on the pill. My period was much longer 7 days but very light, I wasn't tired or cranky. Good luck.

When I was in middle school and HS, I had big problems. At my worst in HS, my period lasted more like 3 weeks and was fairly heavy. The doctor wanted to put me on BC pills but Mom said no way. Instead I was miserable, and on prenatal vitamins and iron. That didn't help alot. Didn't help at all for the periods just alittle for the tiredness. When I left home I went on BC pills and stopped having problems. I haven't in the 10 years since I went off of them either. Well, except for the headaches and mood swings!

Has he checked for a hormone imbalance? What about your thyroid? (I seem to rememer that was one of the symtoms and thyroid function can be upset by hormone imbalance like post pregnancy) Have you had a Pap since you've started having problems? I've never heard of emergency hormones either.

They haven't check my thyroid, no. I don't think that's it though. They've run some other tests and they were neg. My last 4 cycles have been normal and this time wasn't nearly as bad as the time in August. I'm afraid it's the beginning of a trend though. I sure don't want to have to remmeber to take pills every day. I think I'll wait a few month to see if it works it's self out. I should probably talk to my Dr again huh?

Gosh Lynda I'm so sorry you had to endure all that when you were younger. That's really too bad. :(

My Mom suffered with fibroids for years. She would soak through a double pad in less than an hour. She was very scared to have surgery so she just suffered like that for at least 6 or more years. She finally went into menopause and is fine now. Mom took iron pills and stayed close to the bathroom for a long time. Hope you find a better solution.
