I would love to learn how to make candles...and I know my kids would love to get in on this too. It would be a great craft for me to do this summer when I run the arts and crafts program at camp. Anyone have any hints for me?

Have fun with candle making. I run my own daycare and we starting making candles for gifts. Before we started I was able to take my children on a field trip to a bee farm. May or early June is a great time.

This was not only the start of cangle making but also learning about beeswax and bees.

It was a wonderful outing. Later we made very simple candles by purchasing different coloured beeswax sheets, thin fancy ribbon, clear glue, glitter and cotton wick.

These are so simple. Lay a length of wick across the tip of the square wax placed like a diamond shape. Use a blow dryer to soften the wax slightly. Begin to roll the softened wax until you reach the tip on the other side.

Let the children paint glue all over the outside then they can roll them in the glitter. Next wind the ribbon from the top down the candle glue both ends and the center or the whole ribbon.

They look so pretty and the children know they have accomplished this fun task all on their own. Even the youngest can do this candle.

You can start from scratch melting old crayons or use parawax and melt it down.

Have you even made a candle in a soup can?

I hope these will be helpful. We have a wonderful store in Canada called Michael's it is great for craft ideas and supplies.

Thanks for the help Cheryl.....It sounds like a great craft to use this summer at craft....how do you do it with crayons? Wax blocks? Soup Cans?

With crayons you can melt them down and pour layers of each colour into a mold (don't forget a wick as I did once)

With a tin you freeze water then when it is frozen the children use a hammer and nail to make designs. Older children can draw one on the outside of the can first then make the indentations with the nail. When you are satisfied with your design empty the ice and start filling with wax. Melted crayons or melted parawax. You can even buy this neat jelly wax substance in craft shops.

Beeswax sheets are still the easiest and you can decorate them with melted wax crayon shapes or melt small cookie cutter beeswax shapes onto the already formed candle.

Hope this helps.
