Tesla coil using auto parts?

Has anyone ever made a tesla coil using auto parts? I've seen the directions for sale on the web but hate to buy something that may not work. DS is 11 and I think this would be something he'd love to do. They just had a fun only science fair at his new school and this looks like an idea for him, if he trys it and wants to.

From the brief search I just did, it seems that it all depends on what you want to do/demonstrate with it, as there are different useages, and therefore different plans for them.

However, I just happen to work in a manufacturing plant that makes solenoids and valves for the aerospace industry/military. We have some very talented and knowledgeable engineers and technicians there; I will make an inquiry for you!
