Is my computer about to die?

I'll be going along, minding my business, and all of a sudden the montior goes black. I thought at first a cable was loose, but I don't think so. I'll turn it off and turn it back on, and it comes up....
does this sound like it's about to bite the dust? And does it sounds like it might just be the monitor or would the whole system be crap? lol

what kind of computer and how old?

does it happen while you are typing/using the mouse or does it happen when you are reading (ie no input from the user)?

I don't know much about them...

I would guess there is a site out there that could help you troubleshoot through it. I know HP has it for printers and I was amazed at the results. It diagnosed a problem that I swore it could not have been.
