ok, as I casually look around for homes...I am finding lots of inground pools.....I would rather have a community pool, than one in my own back yard.....I am thinking....but I want to ask those of you who have one...do you use it enough to justify it? is it expensive to maintain?

We had one in our house in Dallas, and growing up we always had one. I wish this house did! It's great to be able to just walk out your door, swim for 30 minutes if you want and then go back in without having to pack the pool bag, pack the car, load the kids in ect. It also makes for fun entertaining "come over for a swim and burgers". Expense wise, we were lazy and had a pool service, compared in price to our lawn service.
Neighborhood pools are great too. You get to meet more people in your neighborhood, swim teams are available, no maintenance hassles. But, is it open year round? Our pool is only open May-Sept, but it's warmer here to swim longers. We pay $450 a year to only swim such a short time, and this year the kids aren't doing swim team even so you do have to consider the amoritized cost of that.

Renee, Somehow I wouldn't think you'd have to do extensive research into pools. Haven't you run across people in the business? ;)

Oh my... 8o We absolutely LOVE our pool. It's so nice to have it to go into any time we want, and all by ourselves. No other kids jumping (peeing) and screaming around you... As for entertainment, I couldn't imagine not having it. LOL When we have guests over they usually always bring their suits and end up in the pool. My children probably wouldn't have learned how to swim if it weren't for the fact that we had the pool in our back yard. It's nice... private and oh, soooooooo nice. I think you'd enjoy it too.

Dh keeps ours up and say's it's not really that hard. Before we got it a few people told us how expensive it would be for chemicals... (Sam's Club is very reasonable) and the upkeep. We purchased a pool cleaner a few years ago and we really hardly have to do anything. Did I say I love my pool??? LOL

I should add that all of my dd's have also enjoyed the pool because there is never a lack of anything to do when they have their friends over. Last summer dd #3 had the Cheerleader party over at our house and of course, it ended up being a big pool party. They had a blast!
We really do use it a lot and feel that it's been well worth every penny we spent to have it put in.

Our neighbors across the street, and neighbors next door both have pools. So...uh...no, we don't have one! At the end of the summer we give both families gift certificates to the local pool supply store!!! They are so nice to let dks swim almost daily!

My inlaws have a pool at their house in phoenix. The ones my 3 oldest and myself visited last week. Its a saltwater system and requires little work. The pool guy comes once a week (I think they pay 75/month) to check on it and to clean the sides. He has an autosweeper that does the cleaning. The attached ionizer keeps the clorine level where it needs to be. I don't think he has added salt in the 4 years they have been there. We were there 8 days and nothing needed to be checked or done while we were there.
