Just had my computer flash a big warning message screen to me that my system memory is running very low, therefore Norton virus protection may not be able to function properly or something like that. What does this mean, do I need to do something to fix it, and if so - what? ?( I feel like a moron - I am so darn computer illiterate.

That used to happen to me, too, Karla. Dh defragmented (?) and emptied all temporary folders (internet and others I didn't know existed) and also emptied the recycle bin. He also eventually moved quite a bit of stuff to the second hard drive we have in order to free up space on the c drive. I'm sure I'm not being helpful so I'll shut up now. LOL! Hey, I just run this thing! ;)

Thanks gals! We have Norton System Works and I ran all of that last week when I was having mouse troubles - pretty sure it defragged and deleted a lot, but I'll have to look into that again. I also took some of dks stuff off, so I am surprised that this is coming up. :tearhair:

You may have a program that needs to be reinstalled. Sometimes they can appear to be working ok but do not close down properly and as result the memory it used isn't released. You could shut the computer down then restart it. Once its rebooted check how much free memory you have. Then load one program at a time and close it out and see how the memory looks after that. You would only need to check the ones you use all the time.
Some programs when installed can run things in the background even when you are not running the program. Norton does this for obvious reasons, but realplayer does it too. There are several things that are loaded upon startup that are not necessary and that would be a way to free things up as well. I know in windows 98 you run msconfig and go to the startup tab. If you have a support agreement with your computer they could proably help you determine what is needed or what each of the processes are and let you determine whether they are needed.
You said you have norton antivirus software as well as system works. Do you have Norton Internet Security. It gets rid of web bugs that can chew into memory and slow things down as well. If not I'd recommend you get it or if you want some shareware you can do a search for adaware and download that. If you have 10-20 sites or more tracking where you are going that can really chew your resources. Typically you can get the Security software for an inexpensive price with rebates because you are already a customer. If you go to symantec and do a search for rebates you'll be able to see the list.
Good luck!!

I have Adaware, it's amazing how many things it finds!!!
I did msconfig with Windows ME to get alot of programs off of start up too.
