View Full Version : Sick of high-paid teachers
This was in a recent letter to the editor:
I for one, am sick and tired of those high-paid teachers. Their hefty salaries are drying up taxes and they only work nine or ten months a year.
It's time we put things into perspective and pay them for what they do: baby-sit. We get that for less than minimum wage.
I would give them $3 per hour and pay them only for the hours they work. None of that silly "planning time" would count. that would be $15 per day. Each parent should pay $15 per day for these teachers to baby-sit their children.
Now how many do they "teach" in a day, maybe 25? That's $375 a day. But remember they work only 180 days a year.
I'm not going to pay them for any vacations. Let's see, that's $375 x 180, or $67,500. (Hold on, my calculator must need new batteries.)
Wait a minute, there is something wrong here.
There sure is.

LOL! When I saw the topic of your thread I almost passed out!! High paid teacher is a contradiction in terms!
I about fainted at the topic too!!! I am going to email this to some friends of mine who are teachers!
Yeah, I was pretty steamed when I started reading it the first time myself. This comes on the heals of a $3000.00 raise over 2 years for Ark. teachers that was just passed in the last legislative session. I thought someone was upset over that.
I remember when I first began teaching, I worked 7 years before I got a raise.

Loved this, Kat!!!!! LOL LOL I am definately going to pass this around at my school.
My goodness...I work at a small parochial school and you'd all die if you knew how little money I actually make at my full time teaching job. (Of course...we always spend a lot of our "salary" on classroom supplies, etc. right???? :) ) $67,000.....My dh would FAINT! Luckily I get my rewards in non-monetary ways. The success of the children is my "pay".

That's a good one. Dh and I got into it one night about teachers' salaries. I told him it's not my fault I chose an occupation with those hours and he was stupid enough to choose farming! (LOL--was just giving him a hard time)
I will definitely share that with my sisters who are teachers. Thanks for sharing!

I also gasped when I saw the topic! Dh is a teacher and with me staying home I can vouch for how little teachers are paid! :( I'm gonna pass this on to him! :)

You've got that right. The dedicated teachers are not in it for the money. I know what you mean about making less in a private school like yours. We wanted to start a Christian school since we had so many church members in education, but we just could not afford the drastic cuts in pay it would have meant. You deserve :thumb:

I don't think people realize all the work involved in teaching... it goes way beyond what goes on in the classroom. I know just doing day care I spend at least an hour to 1-1/2 hours a night preparing for the next day to say nothing about all the time spent on washing/scrubbing and picking up. I'm sure that if those who complain the most had to do your job for a while, they'd appreciate all you do a lot more. :) Some people just don't have a clue...
bye...

I have to agree I did a double take when I read the headline. I was wondering why kat would print such a thing with her being a teacher. I should have known that there was more to it. I think this is so true. I am definitely going to pass it on. Thank you.
