I know where Canada is at. It is south of us right? JK

I was amazed when I interned the number of children living in FL that didn't know there states or the capitol of FL.

the answer is...

their neighbor!

In the house I live in now I do know the neighbors who live on either side of me, but there have been other places we've lived that I didn't know my neighbors at all.

That's a sad thing, isn't it? Along those same lines, this topic got me thinking... I live in an area of town that has a reputation for being the "scary side," and even by looking at the street I live on, you might think it isn't a good neighborhood-- the houses are a bit old (although new ones are being built on the cross street), yards are neglected, etc., but we are all "nice" families, with young children, we look out for those children, wave at each other, respect each other's property, and we live just around the corner from the best elementary in the county. One of the things that makes my neighborhood so good is a year ago we had some "undesirables" living right next door to us. They were drug dealers, and broke a whole list of neighborhood laws and ethics. One of the punks shot my son with a bb gun-- ds and dh had to go to court and testify- and then they stole my ds bicycle and stripped all the parts from the frame! 8o The cops were over here almost everyday. Well, the other neighbors got sick of that, and when they heard what happened to ds, they called us up and offered ds their kid's bicycle, since their ds had just gotten a new one. We had a little meeting and shared what we knew, then banded together to drive those scumbuckets off our street. Now we have a nice, safe neighborhood once again! But to get to my point... you can't always judge a neighborhood by it's appearance. You have to get to know the neighbors who live there. :)

The neighborhood you're describing sounds like the old neighborhood where we use to live. All of the homes were older, some in not the very best condition... yards just so so, but the neighbor's were awesome! You could always count on them to be there for you. We'll still go back to visit every once in a while. In a lot of way's they are a lot nicer than a lot of our neighbor's here. You'll find a lot of good and bad people everywhere you go/live... no matter what neighborhood your in. :) We've got one neighbor here who apparently thinks they're much better than some of us... I don't kow how they decide is or isn't... but every once in a while dh and I will warrent a huge smile and a wave, while at other times were totally ignored. I guess if I had the choice, I'd much rather live in a not so nice neighborhood with a bunch of wonderful people than in a nice neighborhood with a bunch of persnickity snobs. LOL

It's funny I only know the neighbors that we grew up with. Any of the who've moved in over the last 10 years or so we don't even know. Once in a while we'll smile as we drive past.

It's rather said I think!

I know both my neighbors, not really well...but well enough to dropp off fresh peaches when my tree is full....know the peoples names behind me...but not very friendly....

How sad....that answer made me sad :(

where my parents lived, and I grew up....we knew everyone on the block.....some are still there....

This answer makes me very sad and somewhat angry! Sad because I couldn't never imagine living in a neighborhood where you don't know you neighbors. Angry, cause don't you? Why aren't you out there introducing yourself? Too shy..well maybe they are too? Organize a block party!! Do something!

In Germany we didn't really know any of out neighbors. We had our friends and we weren't home much. Off base in NC we knew the neighbors on one side and the people across the street. The house on the other side of us was empty. Didn't feel the need to know anyone as I knew I wouldn't live there long and I didn't go outside very much. On base in NC I knew more of my neighbors and was very close to one set of them. They now live here in AK, but we don't see them very often because they live an hour away. Now I know the neighbors that live on either side of me and I say hi to some of the others around. Honestly I don't want to know them. People on base are more nosey than anything and just want to gossip! I'm sure when we move and buy a house we'll make more of an attepmt to get to know our neighbors.

being a gypsy, makes it hard....I feel that way about getting to chummy...we are after all not staying here permanently....

As long as we are friendly and know who belongs where...I am cool with that.

I've lived in the country most of my life so we don't have a lot of neighbors. We've usually had neighbors come over and introduce themselves. The last place we lived we had neighbors who would call whenever they were headed to town to see if we needed anything. That was really hard to get used to. We weren't used to such friendliness.

Since we've living back where I grew up I knew most everyone when we moved in.
