I am in my first year teaching preschool to 3-5 year olds. My director just informed me that I should do parent teacher conferences since it is the end of the school year. Does anyone have any good EASY ideas on a progress report or something I could use for evaluation to give to parents? Any info would be helpful!! Thanks!

HI! Welcome!!

It kinda sounds like this was just sprung on you! Too bad you couldn't have known at the beginning of the year so you could show progress from then to now.

Does your director have any progress check off sheets that you could use? Maybe develop one of your own that includes the skills you work on each day. Things like cutting straight and curved lines, holding pencil (small motor skills), running, hopping, catching a ball, etc. (large gross motor), speech(are there words/sounds that aren't said correctly), language (understanding spoken directions, etc), letter & number recognition, counting, one to one correspondence, etc.

There's lots more I'm sure you can think of as you go through your day. If you listed these vertically down a page with columns like excellent, good, needs improvement( or what ever to show how well they are doing on them.)

Best of luck!! Hope this helps!!

Hello Melissa
I am what you call a newbie too!!
Down here in New Zealand we do parent teacher interviews/conferences too!!
We show the parents their child's portfolio which has a collection of their work in it. For example art stages, photographs of work the is child engaged in. anything that they may have done at family group which I think is similar to your circle time in the States. I am not 100% sure. Also observations are shared with the parents.
We give the parents a sheet to fill out which basically asks about what they would like to discuss at the interview. This comes back before the interview so the teachers can analyse the information. Their is also a space for the teachers to write some notes and at the interview both the parents and teacher sign the form together.
Hope this helps!!

Hello I also teach pre-school, I teach only 3 year olds. We also have parent/teacher conferences. I find that most parents of this age group are most interested in the social activity of their child. Of course they are interested in the academic acpect too, but what they really need to know is that their child has friends and plays nice with theur friends. So this is a comment I always add to my reports:
"Sarah has many friends and likes to play nice, with all her friends." Or "Sarah likes to help during clean-up time, and likes to help her many friends." Or
"Sarah is learning how to share with her many friends".
Parents really need to know if their child is learning how to behave and interact with his/her peers.
I hope this helps you!
