Can't remember if I've posted about this or not but I need some ideas. We're having a homeschool dinner/open house in a couple of weeks for our families and another hs family. The theme is going to be apples and I'm looking for a handmade gift to give to the two girls (7 & 9) in the other hs family. For the women we're making a mini-apple cookbook with apple based recipes. For the men we're canning jars of homemade cinnamon applesauce. We're going to put these beside the dinner plates.

We're having trouble coming up with ideas for the girls though. I found instructions for making apple dolls (dolls with dried apple heads, like they used to make) and also instructions for making apple pins (decorative, to wear on your shirt). Hopefully someone else will have an idea of what else might be appropriate! :)

Did you check familyfun.com? One idea is to stamp a canvas bag with apples.

Or this site had an apple pencil holder (paper mache). That would be cute for them if they had a desk in their room? Also, had an 'apple' container made with terra cotta pots - could be cute for barrettes or other accessories?

Or, you could make an apple beaded safety pin:

Hope one of these links helps. Have fun! :)

When I make an apple crisp, apples are chopped with a crum topping I usually cook it for about 30-35 min at 350C..

Hope this helps..

Thanks Karla, for the links! I hadn't thought about Family Fun and I love that tote bag! :)

Ann, sorry I didn't get back in time for apple advice. I thought I had a recipe specifically for an apple concoction over ice cream but now I can't find it. Can you share what you did?

Hi everyone. I'm not much help on crafts with apples, but do have an interesting caramel recipe we use at home to dip apple slices in.

I hope this is one you don't know about already.

Take a can of sweetened condensed milk and peel the label off but don't open the can. Boil a pot of water and then lower to a low simmer. Place the unopened can into the simmering water, cover with a lid. Walk away for 4 hours. trust me. After 4 hours, grab your tongs and take it out ~ place directly into the freezer for 10 minutes.
Then open the can and you have warm, creamy caramel. Almost too easy, and inexpensive. Even has an added bonus... No dishes to wash!

:* what could be greater?

If you're like me and question that all that heat on a sealed can might cause too much pressure inside causing an explosion.... I can only share my personal experience when I say, Ive made this countless times and that has never happened.
Enjoy, Jen

Thanks! I'll have to try that. The kids love carmel apples!

I think the girls decided on making up a kit for their friends to make the apple pin for the gift. :)
