DS, is having an awful time with Math. He has been recommended to a tutor afterschool for Math. She recommend we do some Math building computer exercises? but didn't give any examples...any suggestions? His teacher also commented on his attidude, and how he really needs to just slow down, and concentrate on what he is doing....Got great scores on his reading and Spelling....

Dh did good....said ds's Teacher was nice, has lots of 8 year old boys in her class...God bless her.

Thats Great!!!!

I had an interview with DS#2's teacher yesterday too.

He is doing really well too.. She said he is a neat worker and tries hard. He also has very good printing for Grade 1. All he has to do is work on his letter sounds, and not disturbing others.lol

She also said that he draws very well for his age...

Is it a pull out program, separate class, or extra work type of thing?

Those computer games I mentioned are good, so is repetition. Black jack is always a fun way to do math!

Renee I find board games a great way to be getting them to add and subtract, ie Monopoly of Life. What grade is he in - 3? We bought dd a great cdrom for math when she was in grade 4, it is called "mind twister math" by edmark. Her teacher recommended it, and both dds have used it a lot. Have you considered a tutor, just to give him a different teaching perspective?

When I was in elementary school in CA we had the gate program at our school. Depending on the grade of the child it was either a pull out program (younger grades) or a seperate class (older grades) all together. My step-bro had to actually be bussed to another school because they didn't have a gate program at his school. (This was in the 1980's and 90's though)

My ds is in the process of being tested for our gifted program here (it's called IGNITE) and it's a pull out program once a week. They don't test here until second grade. We'll see what happens when his testing is complete.

My dd is having problems with math too. We see the problems at home, but her teacher says she's doing great. ?( I have asked him to send home extra practice work which he has done and we are working with flash cards as well. She's in 4th grade and still adds and subtracts using her fingers. Is that normal for a kid her age??? I don't think so, but maybe I'm wrong. She also has problems with mulitplication and division and well as measuring. Maybe I should look into a tutor for her. I get frustrated when I try to help her.

My ds is in 4th grade and still adds and subtracts with his fingers. This is how they taught him in 1 and 2 grade. However he can multiply and divide in his head. Makes me a little crazy.

His teacher this year is the same as last year and she is big into memorizing your times tables. The school system is not. They are more interested in how you get the answer and how many different ways you can figure out the problem. They feel this way the kids will score higher on the MCAS tests.

But I think math is math and there is only one answer and you can't illistrate it or do 2+7 three different ways.
