Hi Kathy! Dd is asking for a riding helmet for Christmas. Just starting to do some searching for one. I assume your dd's wear one when the ride. Any suggestions to look for when buying one?

Nothing is available in the town we live in, so may be looking to buy one on line.
Thanks!

Oh, any other "must haves" that your dd's love?

:)

Hi Darlene!

Is your dd starting lessons?

I am going to try to link you to a good helmet from a great cdn website, here goes:

http://www.greenhawk.net/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/scstore/p-DRC0511.html?L+scstore+rgcf2978ff5b4a5b+1069029711

If it doesn't work, the website is www.greenhawk.net and the helmet is the Troxel Sport Ultra Light. They have it on sale right now for a great price. Their customer service is excellent and if you call they will even walk you through how to measure her head properly.

If she is just starting out, a helmet is critical. Other than that, stretchy pants of some kind ( a lot of kids wear leggings) and a boot with a heel (Zellers have Cherokee hiking boots for $29.99 that a lot of kids wear). Gloves are good too but again if she is just starting out you can get mini gloves at the dollar store that have sticky dots (??) printed on the palms, good for grip. Once she decides it's really her thing, there is no shortage of what to get, believe me!

Are there any tack stores near you? The Troxel helmets are pretty basic, most stores carry them.

If you have any other questions, let me know!

Thanks Kathy! In September, Dd and my mom bought, quite literally, an old gray mare. She is a paint and is approx 23 yrs old. Dd has been riding her bareback and has hit the ground a few times! Not much riding now. Dd gets the Horse Canada magazine and read an article about a bareback pad and it looking into one of those. Niether she nor my mom have much extra $ to put into accessories. But, a helmet is a must.

Will show the site to dd and see what she thinks! The nearest tack store is 1/2 hour drive, so may go next weekend and see what they have. Love the sticky dot glove suggestion!

Thanks!

:)

Darlene,
Just a thought ... suggestion ??.. lol
Do you sew or crochet ????
If you sew you can make a pad outta fleece .. nice and soft..
you would need to measure and have two pieces of fleece ... sew up 3 sides an part of the 4th side, put a thin layer of polyester fiber between them .. close the hole .. and there you would have a pad for her to use bareback on the horse... OR
if you crochet ..... again you would have to measure... but use 4 to 6 strands of yarn at one time ... crochet a blanket for the horse. I did a crochet one for under a saddle ... 30 x 31 inches..
my friend that I made it for wanted extra protection between pad and saddle for his horse.. and asked if I could do it and would I mind doing it... told him no problem and I did one for him in crochet.... He loves !! it...
seeee yaaaa....

PS... if useing 4 strands use a P Hook ... If using 6 strands use a S hook... sorry forgot to tell ya that... anyways.. I'm gone again..

Oh, so nice of you to offer! Could you have one ready by Christmas??!! ;)

Seriously....I am not very creative. The bareback pad dd saw had stirrups attached, which would be very useful. She has made a couple of inquiries as to a Cdn supplier, just waiting to hear back from them.

Thanks for the suggestions!

CUTEEEE !!!.... lololol
I could have the fleece one done in about a day ... (but noooo stirrups on it) ... lolol
The crochet one would take about 4 or 5 days.... but again noooo stirrups..... lololol
soooo yesss... it could be done and in the mail by the end of the month for sure.... lolololol

but sounds like it would be great getting the stirrups on there for her... I didnt' think about stirrups... lol I dont' ride so have no idea about most things with it. I do know that my friend loved his, but like I said it was to go between the pad and the saddle for him.

Hope they answer ya back reallll sooonn..

see yaaaaa.....

That's so cool Darlene! Congrats to your dd (and your Mom I guess?? LOL!).

Can she put a saddle on her? Because there are some good used saddles out there for what she would probably pay for the bareback pad.
